Job Description
Position Purpose:
Directs and supervises the Dewatering and Drying and Silo/Loadout operations and maintenance to ensure continuous safe and cost-effective production 7/24/365 days/year. This facility constitutes about 1/3 of the project's equipment, staff and costs and has unique and significant risk factors. This manager provides technical directions to all shift operators, shift supervisors and lead operators regarding daily operations in D&D.  Responsible for determining and coordinating all chemical ordering, inventory management, dosage rates and maintenance priorities for these facilities.  Leads management assessment and development of operator performance in these facilities.  Investigates equipment problems beyond the normal established maintenance procedures and develops work around strategies for safely maintaining production and quality goals. Establishes training and testing procedures and implements for D&D/Silo personnel. Leads review and refinement of all Standard Operating Procedures for these facilities. Provides key coordination for Client's contract compliance, marketing staff and customers. Continuously implements product and quality improvements and customer service.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
Oversee dewatering and drying and silo operations to ensure wastewater solids disposal.
Coordinates shift and day personnel and equipment to meet operational and maintenance needs.
Ensures D&D and Silos are operated to meet energy and chemical conservation requirements. Directs first line Shift Supervisors and Maintenance Supervisors in special procedures for maintaining and operating equipment in D&D and Silo/Loadout
Develops, writes, and implements department's SOPs.
Leads complex equipment troubleshooting and work around strategy development identifying the priorities in conjunction with operational needs.
React immediately and independently to unpredictable situations caused by equipment problems, construction, and emergencies beyond established maintenance procedures.
Promotes safety practices and procedures by training employees, reporting on unsafe conditions by filing reports on injuries. Ensure that all safety practices and procedures are followed.
Scopes and writes maintenance requests
Develops and maintains the annual operating budget for Dewatering and Drying
Ensures chemical inventory is tracked and orders are placed and received as needed.
Identifies MMSD Capital projects for the Dewatering and Drying and Silo Facilities. Reviews and comments on MMSD Capital projects designs
Supervises and evaluates shift and day personnel to ensure continuing availability of qualified staff. Administers management policies and directives, trains and evaluates subordinate staff including administering discipline as required.
Assists in the hiring/interviewing process of department staff.
Assists in the grievance resolution process.
Assists with tours of the facility.
Supports Veolia's commitment to safety and the environment by complying with the programs regarding health, safety and protection of the environment.  Demonstrates safe work practices, takes part in safety meetings as required, and advises the supervisor of any non-conforming conditions.
Work Environment:
Work is regularly performed in both an office and plant environment.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Advanced wastewater license in Mechanical Dewatering required.
5 -10 years advanced training in dewatering and dryer systems
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge and skills in wastewater solids dewatering and drying processes and equipment.
Knowledge and skills in wastewater treatment processes and equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures in the operation of a wastewater plant.
Knowledge of laboratory skills, electrical concepts, hydraulic concepts, and electronic concepts.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with client, public, employees, etc.
Excellent management and organizational skills
Superior organizational skills and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on several projects.
Ability to operate within a team atmosphere.
Ability to shift priorities frequently and effectively perform under pressure.
Ability to read, review and comment on the facility's blueprints, plans and schematics.
Ability to operate computer, keyboarding and other office machines as needed.
Skills in Microsoft Office Suite and on-line distributed control systems.
Strong basic mathematics, writing and inventory control skills.
Ability to be on call and work beyond normal business hours as required
