Responsibilities The U.S. Attorney's Office is currently recruiting for an AUSA position in the Civil Division. The Civil Division is responsible for investigating and prosecuting affirmative civil cases for damages due to fraud upon the federal government and civil monetary penalties for violations of federal program regulations and for defending all civil actions filed against the United States, its agencies, officers, and employees in the Southern District of Alabama. The affirmative caseload of the Civil Division includes fraud cases brought under the False Claims Act and other statutes, federal regulatory enforcement actions, and civil forfeiture cases. The defensive caseload of the Civil Division includes tort litigation, employment litigation, immigration litigation, bankruptcy, and the defense of civil rights lawsuits filed against federal officers and employees for alleged constitutional violations. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. See www.sss.gov. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have extensive litigation experience in defensive civil matters, including the following practice areas: mixed Title VII, personal injury / tort (FTCA), condemnation/eminent domain, environmental, and civil health care fraud cases. Because the applicant will handle affirmative, defensive, and parallel proceedings/cases, the ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in civil practice and procedure, in contested litigation and mediation, and in complex jury trials. Additionally, because the applicant will handle bankruptcy cases, the ideal candidate will possess bankruptcy courtroom experience. The ideal candidate must possess quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. The ideal candidate should also have well-developed computer skills in automated research, electronic court filing, email and word processing systems and software, and document management platforms, and elitigation tools. Additional Information Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $79,440 to $193,394 which includes 17.06% locality pay.
