Allied Universal Services is seeking the position of a Fire Lieutenant
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision and direction of the Fire Captain or Chief Officers, will serve as a Lieutenant assigned to a
Station responsible for leading a shift in carrying out a comprehensive fire and emergency services program to include protecting life and property by supervising and performing firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescues, fire prevention, and public education duties. This position will interface with all levels of employees and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Be able to maintain logs and data collection reports as required by Caterpillar Inc.
Meet with client representatives as scheduled or as needed to provide assurance that all fire and life safety
requirements are being met and to provide quality customer service.
Be competent in computer skills including: Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft
PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, etc.
Be able to assume incident command of an incident until relieved by proper authority.
Plan and assign work, give instructions, maintain discipline, and make decisions relating to supervision
of the station, engine companies, and firefighters engaged in fighting, structural, or other fires,
flood control, hazardous materials incidents, emergency responses, technical rescue, and any other emergency
activities.
May occasionally perform minor maintenance on fire stations and apparatus at the direction of the Fire Chief or Station Captain.
Supervise projects related to resource management (inventory and obtaining specs of tools and equipment at the direction of the station captain or fire chief).
Shall be required to train personnel on site specific tasks.
May be required to drive and operate fire apparatus and power tools during emergency incidents and non-emergency project work.
Lead teams in the preparation and maintenance of fire pre-plans and the facility fire prevention plan.
Apply and enforce fire prevention and life safety codes.
Shall conduct fire prevention and education programs.
Issue fire and safety code corrective notices and make reports on origin and cause of fires.
Assist in fire department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
Advise and provide counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives by management.
Recommend selection of candidates for vacancies, promotions, details, and reassignments in consideration
of skills and qualifications, mission requirements, and EEO objectives.
Submit for interpretation and modification of performance standards.
Explain performance expectations to employees and provide regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses.
Hold employees responsible for completion of work assignments.
Appraise subordinate workers' performance ensuring consistency and equity in rating techniques.
2 I. Hear and resolve employee complaints and refer serious unresolved complaints to higher level
management.
Recommend awards when appropriate.
Effect minor disciplinary measures such as warnings and reprimands, and recommend action in more
serious disciplinary matters.
Initiate action to correct performance or conduct problems.
Prepare documentation to support actions taken.
Identify employee development needs and provide or arrange for training (on and off duty) to
maintain and improve job performance.
Encourage self-development.
Ensure that all necessary positions are always staffed.
Recognize and take action to correct situations that pose a threat to the health or safety of subordinates.
Apply EEO principles to all personnel management actions and decisions, and ensure all personnel are
treated in a manner free of discrimination.
Periodically review position descriptions to ensure accuracy, and the most effective utilization of personnel
resources.
Explain classification determinations and other personnel policies and procedures to employees.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Act as the primary contact with client representatives, and generally supervise facility fire operations on assigned
duty schedule.
Respond to all emergencies, including but not limited to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents,
hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue incidents, water leaks and flooding as requested by the client.
Know and carry out the facility fire prevention plan.
Ensure and/or inspect and maintain fixed and portable fire & rescue equipment and maintain records In
accordance to local standards, codes and laws.
Conduct weekly, monthly and annual fixed and portable fire & rescue equipment inspections in assigned areas
throughout the facilities and maintenance of records in accordance with local standards, codes and laws.
Ensure and/or monitor all hot work operations and provide standby support during hazardous hot work
operations when requested by the client.
Participate and assist with insurance carrier and other outside agency inspections and audits.
Ensure and/or provide rescue standby support for confined space entry operations when requested by the client.
Ensure and/or test on-site fire pumps in accordance with local standards, codes and laws (such as NFPA
Standards or FM Global requirements)
Ensure and/or test all fire protection systems such as sprinkler, fire pumps, post-indicator valves, risers, tamper
alarms, fire detection systems, and specialized extinguishing systems.
Maintain all inspection and maintenance records in accordance with local standards, codes and laws as well as
client site requirements.
Assist with initial qualification and annual requalification and other training as necessary for all firefighters
assigned to client facilities.
Recommend corrections of deficiencies found in operational procedures or techniques through follow-up
training.
Assist Captain in managing payroll and scheduling duties.
Ensure fire personnel perform fire, hazardous materials, technical rescues, and EMS operations in accordance
with client's policies, procedures and training.
Ensure all firefighting personnel maintain a high standard of work on fire and rescue related tasks.
Responsible for responding to and managing emergency incident operations in accordance with client's policies
and procedures.
May be required to perform additional duties as requested by client.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY
Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.
Background Prerequisites
Must undergo and meet company and client standards for background and reference checks, controlled
substance testing, and behavioral selection survey, in addition to any mandatory licensing requirements
No misdemeanor convictions within the past (7) seven years
No felony convictions
Must be 18 years of age at time of hire
Must be eligible for employment in the United States
Must have an appropriate valid driver's license for fire apparatus to be driven within the state of
employment.
Must have clean driving record per MVR (7-year DMV printout may be required)
Successfully pass a Hazmat Physical Compliant with NFPA 1582
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or G.E.D. (associate's degree in Fire Technology preferred)
Must be a fire academy graduate from a State certified or Department of Defense certified training facility
meeting the NFPA 1010 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications training guidelines or possess
a Nationally recognized Firefighter II certificate or equivalent (Advanced Technical Firefighter) from a State Fire Marshal's office or from the Department of Defense adopted by the state where fire services are performed.
Must possess or acquire a certification as a Driver Operator Fire Apparatus Engineer within 1 year of promotion to the rank of lieutenant if Training if provided by the department. Department of Defense training facility meeting the NFPA 1002 Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualification guidelines will be considered, but the lieutenant will be required to obtain state certification within 1 year of promotion.
Must possess or acquire a Fire Service Instructor I certification in accordance with NFPA 1041 within 1 year of promotion to the rank of lieutenant if training is provided by the department.
Must possess demonstrated ability as determined by the fire chief and/or a minimum of two years
experience as a full-time fire officer on a municipal, county, state, Department of Defense, or industrial fire
department.
Must possess a valid Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider card from American Heart Association.
Must possess a valid/current EMT-B license and be eligible for licensing as an EMT-B in Illinois.
Must possess a current Hazardous Materials Operations level certification in accordance with NFPA 470.
Must possess NIMS 100,200,700,800 certificate.
DD-214 (if applicable)
Must possess or attain within 1 year of promotion Rope and Confined Space Operations level certification in accordance with NFPA 1006.
