Serves as subject matter expert. Independently analyzes firearm and ballistics evidence at a qualified examiner level. Serves on interdisciplinary committees with the Office of Forensic Science. Collaborates with other experts in the OFS to ensure that all integrated examinations across disciplines are performed, when required. Provide interpretation of significance of findings during expert testimony on examinations in criminal trails. Serve as a mentor and trainer to junior OFS staff and assist in development of training materials, while maintaining an active forensic caseload. Oversee small projects, research, or validation plans within the firearms unit. Follow evidence control procedures to maintain chain-of-evidence integrity. Ensure evidence in locked securely in designated locker or space before and after analysis. Operate computer consoles to interpret high confidence leads generated from the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN) database. Maintain data records and prepare reports. Communicate findings and conclusions with investigators and attorneys. Maintain compliance with all quality assurance standards for forensic accreditation. Check instrumentation for validity and reliability against standards and recalibrates. Participates in research projects by performing routine tests. Provides training, as needed, and under the director of a Senior Forensic Scientist to forensic trainees, police, staff, students, interns, or other members of the criminal justice community. Provide presentations in the field of specialty.Three (3) years of related experience as a Forensic Scientist examining firearm and ballistic
evidence. Master's degree in Chemistry, Biological Science, Forensic Science, Applied Science, Physical or Natural Science, Engineering, or foreign degree equivalent and one (1) year of experience as a Forensic Scientist examining firearm and ballistic evidence. Must be a qualified Forensics Examiner.
