MHLS CASE ANALYST
LOCATION: APPELLATE DIVISION, THIRD DEPARTMENT, MENTAL HYGIENE LEGAL SERVICE, ONEONTA, NEW YORK
BASE SALARY: $64,971
CLASSIFICATION: NON-COMPETITIVE/CONFIDENTIAL

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and Two years of satisfactory full-time experience in social work or a related field with a social services agency, hospital, psychiatric facility, law office, or similar setting; or Master's Degree in social work or a related field from an accredited college or university; or An equivalent combination of education and experience.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK: Under direct supervision of an attorney, MHLS Case Analysts work in the Mental Hygiene Legal Service, an agency dedicated to safeguarding the rights of individuals with mental or developmental disabilities. They serve in a confidential capacity and are responsible for assisting with investigations, interviewing clients, attending case conferences and administrative proceedings, and preparing written reports. MHLS Case Analysts analyze routine cases, make research-based recommendations, refer matters to MHLS attorneys as required, and assist attorneys with case preparation. They may also provide other advocacy services and perform related administrative duties.

ASSIGNMENT: This position will be assigned to the Oneonta Satellite Office of the Third Department's Mental Hygiene Legal Service. Will work under the direct supervision of MHLS staff attorneys in providing advocacy and related services to patients and residents of facilities licensed or operated by the New York State Office of Mental Health and the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities. They interview clients, explain their legal status and rights, and refer matters to MHLS staff attorneys as appropriate. They routinely interact with facility employees including psychiatric, medical, social work, and care management staff. They may attend and participate in conferences, administrative and legal proceedings. They assist staff attorneys in the completion of reports and preparation for administrative and court proceedings regarding the commitment, retention, care and treatment of patients and residents in facilities. May serve as Court Evaluators in Mental Hygiene Law article 81 guardianship proceedings and investigate petitions for guardianship under Surrogate's Court Procedure Act article 17-A. A valid driver's license and reliable vehicle are required.
