POSITION SPECIFICS
We are seeking a motivated Engineering Technologist to join our Polymer Composite Manufacturing (PCM) team in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will support various research activities throughout the Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (AMME) Division including manufacturing and characterization of polymers and fiber-reinforced polymer composites, elastomers, ceramics, and/or multi-material structures.

You will:
Perform and support daily aspects of fabrication and testing in the AMME research facility
Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and other forms of formal documentation
Follow written and verbal instruction when directed and report any issues to your supervisor
Report progress to the principal investigators and other engineering personnel,
Work with engineers to plan, design, fabricate, and assemble new parts/equipment,
Work on interdisciplinary teams
Read and interpret technical data sheets, drawings, procedures, and instructions,
Troubleshoot malfunctioning laboratory equipment
Install and use instrumentation such as strain gages, thermocouples, accelerometers, etc.
Perform and support fabrication of complex composite parts and multi-material assemblies
Support other research personnel with their work as needed in small research teams
Train students and staff on proper operation of laboratory equipment
Execute and document operating procedures on existing and new hardware
Supervise and train interns on equipment operations
Ask questions and reach out to your supervisor or other team members when in doubt
Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment
Additional responsibilities for higher level position:
Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve various engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer/grantor needs
Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results and follow operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes
Conduct experiments/tests in the laboratory/field to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions on basis of research findings and experiences of others researching in related technical areas; may include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data; may include planning/designing experiments or tests and supervising the execution thereof
Initiate or contribute data/analysis/design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or oral/written presentations
Manage projects of varying size and scope, including technical elements, budget/schedule implications, and communication with sponsor(s)
Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members, engineers, and scientists to accomplish organizational goals; provide innovative problem-solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities
Initiate or contribute to business development activities (i.e. white papers, proposals, etc.)
Required skills/knowledge include:
Familiarity with engineering drawing, both mechanical and electrical
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project, with the ability and willingness to learn new computer programs
Operation of various shop and hand tools, precision measurements, drawing interpretation
Must be a team player
Preferred skills and experience include:
Experience fabricating and/or repairing fiber-reinforced composite materials
Experience with CAD software
Working knowledge of materials and structures, especially polymer resins and adhesives
Operation and training of advanced equipment ranging from optical microscopy to programmable furnaces to long-term monitoring of test equipment
Prior experience in process development, design of experiments, and materials processing
Possession of an active security clearance
Your working location will be fully on-site located in State College, PA.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONSIf filled as Engineering Technologist - Advanced Professional, this position requires:
Bachelor's Degree
3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted

SALARY & BENEFITSThe salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $61,800.00 - $102,300.00.THE PROPOSED SALARY RANGE MAY BE IMPACTED BY GEOGRAPHIC DIFFERENTIAL
