Collins Aerospace is seeking to fill a Mechanical Design Engineer II position within our Hydro-Mechanical, Actuation & Pneumatic Valve Design Group.
In this role, you will support the design and development of complex aerospace components and systems. You'll be involved in all phases of the product development lifecycle, including conceptual design, detailed design, testing, and qualification, while adhering to relevant mechanical engineering standards and safety protocols.
The team is responsible for a range of hydro-mechanical components such as jet fuel control systems that perform flow division, fuel metering, pressure regulation, and high-pressure relief. Additionally, we design fuel-draulic actuators and various pneumatic valves, including butterfly, in-line, and check valves.
This position is heavily focused on new product development. You will work from detailed component requirements and perform necessary analyses and specification reviews to create fully engineered physical components. Key considerations during development include performance, weight, envelope, and cost-often requiring innovative design solutions to balance competing requirements.
The group also emphasizes the use of advanced 3D simulations, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to support the design and validation of critical components.
What You Will Do
Capture and protect innovative ideas by leveraging internal intellectual property (IP) tools and processes.
Design major components or key portions of complex systems and proto@types using advanced CAD and engineering software.
Create detailed layouts, sketches, and technical documentation to support component design and manufacturing improvements.
Evaluate critical design factors such as manufacturability, material and equipment availability, interchangeability, serviceability, strength-to-weight ratios, cost, and compliance with specifications.
Perform both 1-D hand calculations and advanced 3-D simulations to analyze and validate component performance.
Develop detailed 3-D solid models using tools like NX Unigraphics, aiding in packaging assessments and weight estimation.
Contribute to the advancement of Collins Aerospace's analysis capabilities by developing, testing, and validating new methods and tools.
Create custom in-house tools to streamline and enhance engineering analysis workflows where applicable.
Qualifications You Must Have
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field
Qualifications We Prefer
Experience with classical mechanical design analysis, including spring design, beam theory, pressure vessels, fluid dynamics, and thermal conduction
Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools such as ANSYS Workbench (or similar) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools like Siemens Star-CCM+ (or equivalent)
Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis and engineering calculations
Experience with coding and scripting languages such as VBA, Python, or similar, to support automation and tool development
Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles
Working knowledge of gas turbine engine systems and their components
