Position Overview: The Senior Principal Engineer, R&D External Innovation is responsible for identifying and assessing external innovation opportunities from the global innovation network to enhance the existing portfolio and R&D pipeline with strategically aligned assets. The primary focus for the R&D External Innovation Senior Principal Engineer will be to source and assess innovative assets, technologies, and partnerships that support J&J MedTech Surgery's Advanced Instrument portfolio across short-term, mid-term, and long-term horizons. These efforts ultimately aim to improve patient outcomes by accelerating the development of innovative surgical technologies.

Key Responsibilities
Collaborate with Global Strategic Marketing to understand the strategic objectives and clinical unmet needs that drive improved patient outcomes and with R&D to understand and contribute to the technology roadmaps of J&J MedTech Surgery's Advanced Instrument portfolio
Lead the identification of external innovation opportunities that align with strategic priorities and technology roadmaps by actively engaging in searches and building networks with clinicians, MedTech companies, suppliers, academic institutions, non-profit research institutes, and venture capital investors
Lead the development and management of external surgeon advisory boards, serving as the primary liaison and collaborating closely with Marketing and R&D teams to inform pipeline strategy, enable hands-on engagement, and drive meaningful product iterations
Collaborate closely with R&D, Marketing, and Medical Affairs SMEs to translate the commercial and clinical value of external opportunities into technical assessments, guiding the technical evaluation and due diligence for external innovations such as partnerships, acquisitions, co-development projects, and licensing arrangements
Oversee interactions with external partners including project planning and management, lead the technical evaluation process, and develop recommendations and proposals for senior leadership
Lead the creation of institutional knowledge for opportunities by delivering clear, concise evaluations and recommendations, stored in an accessible location for future reference
Maintain J&J MedTech Surgery's competitive position by continuously monitoring industry trends and emerging technologies through ongoing market and competitor analysis
Leverage emerging technology trends to identify adjacent opportunities and recommend strategic areas for portfolio expansion
Protect the intellectual property position of the Advanced Instrument portfolio by leading IP-related activities and facilitating contractual agreements resulting from external innovation evaluations
Manage the external innovation R&D budget to ensure efficient resource allocation
Partner closely with Marketing, Research & Development, Business Development, Medical Affairs, Global Strategic Insights, Legal, and Regulatory throughout the process of identifying and evaluating external innovation opportunities
Mentor and develop talent within the organization, fostering a culture of innovation across all levels
Qualifications
Education:
BS in an Engineering field or similar; an advanced degree (MS, PhD) or MBA is preferred
Required Skills & Experiences:
A minimum of 12 years' relevant R&D experience, including a minimum of 5 years in project leadership roles
At least 3 years' experience working in an early-stage, front-end, or innovative environment
Experience in R&D environments working collaboratively across various scientific and engineering fields such as mechanical, electrical, software, materials, digital, connectivity, chemistry, and microbiology
Experience translating high-level commercial and clinical value into technical evaluations to assess performance, weigh tradeoffs, and understand business impacts
Excellent project management and leadership skills to lead multiple opportunity evaluations at once, deliver high-quality technical assessments, and ensure projects are completed on schedule while fulfilling commitments
Ability to quickly establish networks and collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners
Demonstrates a strong external mentality, proactively bringing in new ideas and innovation while maintaining an open mind
Proven ability to challenge established norms and conventional thinking, fostering a culture of innovation by questioning assumptions, identifying opportunities for disruption, and driving transformative change
Experience in working independently as well as leading others to design proto@types, develop test methods, conduct simulations, and rapidly test concepts
Ability to adapt and learn new technical areas quickly
Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills
Ability to work in a high-paced environment while leading multiple priorities
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Preferred Skills & Experiences:
Experience within a medical device or other highly regulated industry
Clinical knowledge and understanding of soft tissue surgery to assist in defining the necessary technical assessments to be performed
Experience supporting contract development with legal partners including CDAs and development agreements
Experience supporting freedom to operate analyses and patent submissions with legal partners

This position is located in Cincinnati, OH and may require up to 20% domestic and international travel.
This position will follow J&J's Hybrid Work policy which requires 3 days on-site in Cincinnati, OH with the option to work up to 2 days remote per week
