We are pleased to announce an opportunity for a HIGH POWER ENERGY STORAGE APPLICATION ENGINEER to join our High Voltage Science and Capacitors team at our Rancho Bernardo location. This role is ideal for a highly motivated and skilled professional with expertise with supercapacitors, electrostatic capacitors, high power discharge circuits, high voltage, and pulsed-power systems, as well as a demonstrated ability to excel in a dynamic Research and Development (R&D) environment.
The selected candidate will report to the Manager of High Voltage Science and Capacitors and collaborate with a team of highly qualified professionals. Responsibilities include designing, prototyping, testing, and deploying advanced solutions; characterize energy storage materials, components and systems; playing a key role in the integration and support of high-power systems; developing safe and reliable control architectures; and standardizing data collection across experimental test equipment. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to the advancement of technologies within GA-EMS' expanding product portfolio. This candidate ideally has a mix of mechanical and electrical engineering skills that will aid the development of advanced energy storage solutions using supercapacitors and dielectric film capacitors.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop architectures, solutions, and test plans for innovative capacitor designs
Perform thermal and electrical engineering analyses, circuit (LTSpice or equivalent, MATLAB) and hardware design, introduce test automation, and document test cells
Develop, design, and build unique and specialized test hardware to characterize capacitors and supercapacitors
Actively participate assembly and testing of capacitor and supercapacitor elements, devices, and arrays, develop code to analyze and interpret data, and record findings
Develop large megajoule class energy storage systems using supercapacitors
Participate in the design and selection of capacitors (both film and supercapacitor) for external customers
Communicate findings to stakeholders and deliver technical presentations and reports
Manage technical projects to ensure alignment with schedules, budgets, and organizational goals
Develop supercapacitor management systems to enhance performance, diagnose health, and protect integrated systems
Engage with customers, systems engineers, and stakeholders to define requirements, ensure compliance, and manage technical efforts
Collaborate with manufacturing teams, engineers, and technicians to develop and support production processes
Lead internal and external design reviews for systems, subsystems, and components
May lead small cross-functional engineering teams on efforts involving high-power electronics, hardware, and system design
Apply advanced concepts in electrical, pulsed power, and capacitor engineering to integrate components into complex systems
Plan and execute technical efforts efficiently and strategically with general direction and minimal supervision
Represent the organization as the primary technical contact on projects as needed
Perform other duties as assigned or required

Job Qualifications:
Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; six (6) or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, four (4) or more years of experience with a master's degree, or two (2) or more years with a PhD. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education
Experience with high-power electrical systems, including hands-on expertise with supercapacitors, power conversion, protection, and switching; power electronics and supplies; instrumentation and control electronics design; and guiding a design from development through production
Expertise in electrochemistry, including cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and supercapacitor aging tests (e.g., long-term cycling stability)
Familiarity with supercapacitor models and management systems
Proficiency with electronic circuit simulation tools (e.g., LTSPICE or related), data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python), finite element analysis, and diagnostics programming languages (e.g., C/C++, C#)
Demonstrated technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, and theory, with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones
Ability to quickly understand and accurately apply new concepts in an evolving project environment
Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to enable effective collaboration across departments and with external professionals
Customer-focused, with the ability to develop innovative designs and resolve advanced technical engineering challenges
Capable of working independently and within a team environment
Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance is required
