Summary The incumbent will serve as a Recreation Assistant for assigned patient care program(s). They play a crucial role in supporting the primary recreation or creative arts therapist in carrying out recreation services. These services and interventions may be administered in both the inpatient and outpatient settings that address the assessed needs of the patients utilizing motivational approaches. Responsibilities Major Duties include but are not limited to: Conducts individualized therapeutic activity interventions based on comprehensive patient assessments. Plans and carries out individual and group activities for the rehabilitation of patients with physical and psychiatric conditions. Monitors, orders, and tracks inventory for recreational supplies and equipment. Organizes community outings. Reports patient progress and overall leisure functioning to the recreation therapist and treatment team members. Provides a positive impact on patient/client self-esteem, life satisfaction, confidence, and increased level of independence. Educates patients on the effective use of equipment to meet their treatment goals. Develops publicity for scheduled special events through using fliers, bulletins, and/or newspapers. Carrying out initial first aid response and/or alerting emergency services as needed. Work Schedule: 10:30am - 7:30pm 3 days per week, 8:00 - 4:30pm 2 days per week, rotational holidays(6 required), every other Saturday/Friday and additional evenings as needed. Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities. Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service. Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities. Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children). Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop. Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility. Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the Individual Occupation Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Plans, develops, and executes recreational activities and programs. Prepares publicity materials for special event activities such as posters, exhibits, and flyers. Maintaining the recreation activity areas, offices, outdoor activity areas by performing periodic on-site inspections and reporting problems. Effectively uses professional skills, objectivity, and insight to educate and empower Veterans while providing holistic Veteran centered services. Schedules and conducts evening and weekend programming as appropriate to support hospital-wide and/or departmental objectives. Provides support to established volunteer programs, events, and functions.
