Questions
Under general supervision, incumbent facilitates, provides instruction, and/or supervision to participants in adaptive and inclusive recreation programs, classes and activities, and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs customer relations role, which may include interacting with patrons, participants, business or program partners, and/or city staff to provide information to solve problems.
Maintains attendance and progress records for class participants.
Assists with planning and implementing recreation and leisure activities for program participants with disabilities.
Works as part of a team, attends training, orientation and/or staff meetings as needed.
May provide personal care, including hygiene tasks, to participants.
Communication with AIR Coordinator regarding class or program needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age. One year of relevant work experience, preferably experience working with individuals with disabilities. Previous experience assisting, supervising, planning, or leading activities for persons with disabilities and educational, volunteer, or employment in therapeutic recreation, counseling, or special education preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. First Aid Certification and Universal Precautions certification may be required.
Valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies and procedures of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective customer service.
Knowledge of the principles of full inclusion and the Americans with Disabilities Acts.
Knowledge of behavioral modification techniques.
Knowledge of Universal Precautions.
Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Standard Precautions activities.
Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned areas and make judgements related to safety.
Ability to keep accurate records, organize information, supplies and equipment, and follow established procedures.
Ability to develop, coordinate, promote and, when required, lead program events.
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.
Ability to react quickly and accurately to changing conditions and elements.
Ability to work evenings and weekends.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, and hear. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. The employee is subject to both inside and outside conditions.
