Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
This EM2 position serves as a solid waste compliance inspector conducting field inspections in an assigned territory, inspecting regulated facilities and investigating citizen complaints. This position directly interacts with the public and regulated communities and provides them with guidance to ensure that solid wastes are handled and disposed of properly. Inspectors have regular conversations/outreach with their local government offices and are the main contact for communities when dealing with solid waste issues or debris management during emergencies.
The ideal candidate will be able to work independently using organizational and time management skills to ensure their assigned work is completed as required. This position is responsible for interpreting environmental rules, regulations, and guidelines in order to evaluate compliance and make recommendations on proper solid waste management and disposal. Verbal and written communication skills are a must. The inspector will prepare an accurate and detailed inspection report following each inspection within the required timeframes. This position is required to work with a wide variety of individuals, internally and externally, people skills and experience with conflict resolution and problem solving are important.
A valid Indiana Driver's License is required.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The incumbent interprets laws, regulations and guidelines regarding solid waste management.
Incumbent conducts field inspections in an assigned geographic area and prepares accurate and detailed reports.
When necessary, incumbent will prepare an enforcement referral to the Land Enforcement Section for those facilities that are in significant non-compliance. In addition, the incumbent will represent the solid waste compliance program in all enforcement settlements and hearings associated with the enforcement referral.
Attends meetings; conducts background research; investigates citizen complaints.
Incumbent is required to formulate ideas, develop alternatives, make decisions and recommendations, and collaborate with agency permitting and technical staff.
Handles special projects as assigned.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
A bachelors degree in a relevent field.
At least 2 years experience in a regulatory compliance program.
Thorough knowledge of compliance procedures, policies, strategies, and ability to apply all aspects of the solid waste compliance programs.
Thorough knowledge of the physical sciences as they relate to the solid waste program areas.
Written and verbal communication skills.
Organizational and time management skills.
