The Restorative Technician assists the health care team in helping patients to improve their strength, endurance, mobility and discomfort from injury or disease. The Restorative Technician, under supervision and direction of the Acute Care Rehabilitation team ( Clinical (Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech Language Pathologist) is accountable for assisting patients in furthering their physical, mental and emotional functioning by way of mobility (bed mobility, transfers, ambulation, etc). The Restorative Technician may not provide formal assessment/prognosis of functional status nor provide discharge recommendations. Patients encountered by the Restorative Technician may include those with a diagnosis and/or impairments related to pediatric (2 months - 12 years), adolescent (13-17 years), adult (18-65 years) medical conditions.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Carries out direct patient care duties including transfers, ambulation assistance, and response to call bells.

Assists patient with Activities of Daily Living including bathing, toileting, hygiene and grooming and encourages independence as appropriate.

Carries out activities as instructed by Physical and Occupational Therapists. Instructs patients in simple exercise and flexibility programs including non-skilled handling of patients including passive range of motion to the upper and lower extremity at the direction of allied health care practitioners.

Completes timely documentation of patient related information, (i.e. time in/out, ambulatory care, functional mobility). The Restorative Technician may not provide details pertaining to level of assistance required with transfers nor distance or quality of gait completed with ambulation. The Restorative Technician should refer to documentation provided by the primary Physical/Occupational Therapist as appropriate.

Assembles, analyzes and maintains order/confidentiality of all inpatient records in universal chart order per policy.

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

Maintains unit statistics, manuals and logs as assigned.

Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean, orderly environment.

Maintains responsibility for own development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.

Observes and reports changes in the patient's health status.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to sit for up to ninety minutes at a time. Be able to tolerate standing for thirty to forty-five minutes consecutively. Must be able to use hands/fingers to manipulate dials on machines. Must be able to use hands/fingers to manipulate dials on machines. Must have the ability to lift/move patients up to 300 lbs., push/pull patients weighing up to 300 lbs. Must have the ability to lift/move patients greater 300 lbs. by way of mechanical lift and/or device. Must have the ability to frequently stoop/bend, squat, crouch, kneel and reach above shoulder level. Must be capable of tactile sensation as it relates to feeling for muscle spasms, texture and skin temperature. Must have the ability to hear as it relates to normal conversation and ability to hear call bells. Must be capable of seeing as it relates to general vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION:

Two year associates degree preferred, four year bachelor's degree preferred. Training and education in orthotic bracing preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Current CPR certification. Successful completion of required affiliations and/or CEU's to maintain licensure. Certification as an orthotic fitter preferred.
