Job Title: Assistant Controller

Department: Accounting

Location: 401N Main Street, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858 -- onsite only

Reports To: Controller

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Position Overview

The Assistant SEC Controller will play a critical role in managing the Bank's external financial reporting and ensuring full compliance with SEC regulations. This position will support the Controller in overseeing SEC reporting, SOX compliance, and technical accounting matters while coordinating with auditors, regulators, and internal stakeholders. The ideal candidate will bring strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC requirements, and banking industry reporting standards, along with exceptional attention to detail and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

SEC Reporting

Assist in preparation and filing of all SEC reports, including 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, proxy statements, and other required filings.

Ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial disclosures.

Support XBRL tagging, disclosure checklists, and comment letter responses.

Compliance & Internal Controls

Support Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) 404 compliance, including documentation, testing, and remediation of internal controls.

Monitor changes in SEC, PCAOB, and FASB rules and assess their impact on the Bank's financial reporting.

Ensure policies and procedures comply with SEC, GAAP, and regulatory requirements.

Technical Accounting & Research

Research and document technical accounting issues, including new accounting pronouncements and complex banking transactions (loan accounting, CECL, fair value, etc.).

Assist in drafting accounting position memos and providing guidance to business units.

Audit & Regulatory Coordination

Serve as liaison with external auditors, examiners, and regulators for financial reporting and compliance matters.

Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for quarterly reviews and annual audits.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

Assist in consolidating Bank and subsidiary financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

Review MD&A and footnote disclosures for accuracy and completeness.

Support quarterly earnings release preparation, including press releases and investor presentations.

Support the budgeting function and process.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.

5--8 years of progressive accounting or financial reporting experience, preferably with public companies or financial institutions.

Strong technical knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting requirements, and SOX compliance.

Experience with public banking institutions, CECL, and regulatory reporting a plus.

Proficiency with Workiva, Abrigo or similar financial reporting systems preferred.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to draft clear and concise disclosures.

High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential information.
