A Short History

Historically, the lines between “fine artist” and “skilled artisan” were often blurred, particularly in the realm of architectural painting. Before the modern concept of the independent fine artist, many painters operated more as trades people, applying their skills to functional and decorative aspects of buildings.

In the ancient world, art was deeply integrated into daily life and monumental structures. Roman interiors, for instance, were lavishly painted with illusionistic mythological or landscape scenes, demonstrating sophisticated techniques to create depth and artistry within architectural spaces. These were not merely decorations, but often served to transform the perception of the physical space.

The Renaissance marked a significant period where artists and architects were closely intertwined. While the notion of the “fine artist” began to emerge, with prominent painters gaining higher social status and signing their works, many continued to execute large-scale frescoes and murals within churches, civic buildings, and private residences.

The Industrial Revolution brought changes to the painting trade, with the rise of mass-produced paints, but the demand for skilled artisans for architectural finishes continued. In the 19th and 20th centuries, while some artists moved away from traditional patronage and explored more experimental forms, architectural elements continued to inspire painters. Prior to the advent of the MFA as a terminal degree, many fine artists, worked in trades such as painting, plaster, carpentry, sign painting, etc. to support their livelihood while pursuing their personal art practice.

In essence, the history of fine artists and their work in the trades, especially architectural painting, reveals a continuous interplay between artistic skill, decorative function, and the representation of the built environment. From ancient murals to the specialized genre of architectural painting, artists have consistently lent their talents to enhancing and interpreting the structures that shape human experience.

Duties and Responsibilities

Preparation of surfaces for painting by cleaning, scraping, and sanding as necessary.
Application of various types and shades of paint to interior and exterior surfaces, such as walls, doors, and trims.
Ensuring straight demarcation lines through the use of masking tape and other materials.
Assisting in color mixing and matching to meet the client's requirements.
Maintenance of tools and equipment, ensuring they are clean and in good working order.
Providing exceptional customer service, including understanding clients’ visions and maintaining open communication for feedback.
Demonstrating meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of painting and finishing work.
Working collaboratively with other team members to complete projects efficiently and to a high standard.
Adhering to all health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
Promoting Craftsman Painter services and helping to expand our client base.

Requirements

Proven experience as a Fine Artist with a portfolio of completed works.
Able to climb tall ladders and lift heavy equipment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have their own transportation.
Able to maintain a smoke-free work environment.
Capacity to stand for prolonged periods.
Ownership of a smartphone, preferably an iPhone, to stay connected with the team and manage work schedules.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
A keen eye for aesthetics and details, with the ability to maintain high-quality standards in painting and finishing.
Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and schedules.
A commitment to personal and professional growth in the field of architectural painting and finishing.
