Program:Strategies and Tools for Overdose Prevention (STOP)
Position Title:Research Technician (temporary)/"STOP Technician"
Hourly Rate:$17/hr
Anticipated start date:7/1/2025
Approximate hours per week:15-20 hours (Mostly In-Person)
Purpose
Opioid overdose deaths are preventable. There are simple actions anyone can take to save a life during an overdose emergency, and it is vital that people in our communities are prepared to provide overdose first-aid and have access to life-saving harm reduction supplies.
STOP aims to stop overdose deaths and opioid-related harms in Southeast Michigan (Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties), where half of the state's overdose deaths occur.
Our technicians:
? Support installing and supplying harm reduction access points operated by STOP and the Well-Wayne Station initiative of the School of Social Work's Center for Behavioral Health and Justice
? Increase education about harm reduction, treatment, and recovery support for people with opioid dependence at health fairs and through online platforms
? Improve connection to evidence-based substance use treatment and support through dissemination of information about local resources
? Advance health equity by delivering resources directly to high-need populations and those who serve them
? Counter stigma in every aspect of the job and while representing STOP
? Strengthen community engagement in addressing the impact of the opioid overdose crisis.
Description of Duties
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
? Conduct activities to maintain community-based sites for Narcan/naloxone access, including installation of access point containers, regular restocking, data collection, and outreach, both those maintained by Well Wayne Station and STOP's access points
? Promote STOP and our partnership with the Well Wayne Station initiative at local events, health fairs, and festivals
? Communicate reliably, clearly and effectively with team members and community partners
? Effectively use the contact database to track communications with participants and other community stakeholders
? Participate in required training and professional development
? Attend mandatory weekly Team Meeting (Tuesdays 10:30a - 12p)
? Submit weekly reports reflecting technician activities and progress toward goals
? Submit timesheets biweekly per WSU policies and procedures
Orientation and Training
? STOP welcomes candidates of all backgrounds, and we provide extensive training and professional development for incoming members.
? During the first several weeks of the position, STOP Technicians will have hands on training about how to carry out job responsibilities
? STOP Technicians will also be required to complete up to 10 hours of self-guided modules during their first month with the program to cover essential knowledge areas that directly support our work. STOP Technicians will be required to complete checks for understanding after each module at a satisfactory level to remain in the program. Topics include:
? Opioids 101
? Harm Reduction 101
? How Narcan works
? Stigma 101
? Social Ecological Model/Social Determinants of Health
? New technicians will meet weekly with a staff member to discuss module content, experiences with hands-on training, and address any questions or areas in need of growth for the first month of their time with the program.
? STOP Technicians will have opportunities for ongoing learning and enrichment during their employment in alignment with parameters for PD established by funders and stakeholders

Minimum qualifications
? Desire to affect change related to the opioid overdose crisis
? Unlimited access to a reliable personal vehicle while you are working
? Willingness to drive self, teammates, and supplies to community sites while working to complete routes that will take at least 1.5 hours,NOTE: mileage reimbursement is provided, learn more at: https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/standard-mileage-rates
? Comfort with driving while using navigation tools like Google Maps
? Comfort in driving in Metro Detroit traffic and construction
? Excellent written and verbal communication skills
? Ability to work effectively with others
? Computer skills, including proficiency in use of internet and email, and ability to learn and use other applications such as Google suite, Slack, Canva, etc.
? Have reliable transportation to the service site
? High school diploma or equivalent
? Be at least 18 years of age at the start of the service term
?
