The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness.
This position is a Wildlife and Fisheries Biologist 1-3 Career Progression Group position based at Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area (WMA) that receives direct supervision from a Biologist Supervisor. This position is responsible for the proper management of Pointe-aux-Chenes, Lake Boeuf, Salvador, Timken, and Pass-a-Loutre WMAs, as well as Queen Bess Refuge. Duties involve assisting with daily operations, such as maintaining facilities, equipment, and grounds.
These WMAs and refuge are highly dynamic coastal environments that provide habitat for a large diversity and abundance of resident and migratory wildlife. These WMAs and refuge are located in Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Charles, Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes and consist of habitats ranging from swamp to brackish habitats.
This position requires occasional overnight travel for multiple days to remote areas across Louisiana. You will also spend time working in the field-often from boats, at night, and in various weather conditions-making every day a unique and hands-on experience.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
Responsibilities of this position also include conducting field surveys, research projects, habitat development, user surveys, harvest surveys, and other techniques utilized in wildlife management. Other duties consist of assisting in oil and natural gas environmental regulation investigations and providing assistance to users of the WMAs and refuge. Additionally, the incumbent will be required, as needed, to respond to nuisance or injured wildlife calls, which often require after hours and weekend work. The incumbent may also be required to participate in aerial waterfowl surveys. The incumbent may also provide technical assistance to private landowners. The selected candidate will indirectly supervise multiple Technicians and one Technician Supervisor.
Specific duties may include some or all of the following:
70% Habitat Stewardship and Species Management
Develop and implement management, research, restoration, and/or enhancement projects. Oversees daily activities including but not limited to habitat enhancement/maintenance on various WMAs/refuges throughout coastal Louisiana. Oversees land stewardship and habitat management practices on WMAs/refuges; this may include planting of food plots for wildlife, planting vegetation for habitat/restoration purposes, prescribed burning to encourage growth of desired vegetation, control of nuisance animals, and noxious vegetation as well as others. This person must also operate and maintain water management structures, including but not limited to pumps, stop-log structures, flap gates, sluice gates, etc. in accordance with an approved water management plan and/or instructions. Additionally, this person will inspect water management unit levees regularly to look for deficiencies and work to resolve those deficiencies. Reviews and evaluates ongoing wetland management, research, and/or restoration programs/projects on coastal WMA/refuge properties. Provides technical advice to supervisory staff regarding the formulation and implementation of programs, projects, permits, and policies for resources on coastal WMAs/refuges, including alligators, furbearers, fisheries, non-games resources, r/t/e species, as well as various public hunts and provide input for improving/updating WMA/refuge regulations. Assists and supervises the collection of biological data via hunter bag checks and water level and salinity data as well as assists with managed hunts, trapping and banding projects, etc. Assists with overseeing and monitoring of Oil and Gas projects including but not limited to location selection that best fits the objectives of the WMAs/refuges, any required restorative actions that need to be taken and monitoring of seismic projects. Assists with monitoring and overseeing dredge projects on WMAs/refuges. Designs and implements environmental monitoring/management/research and survey projects that complement the Department's habitat, waterfowl, alligator, furbearer, non-game, r/t/e, and other wildlife species goals. Assists and oversees the collection of biological data and interacts with university personnel concerning research activities on WMAs/refuges. Oversees and participates in proper delineation of state owned/managed property boundary posting.
15% Administrative Duties
Provides advice and recommendations to supervisory personnel regarding projects, programs, and job priorities to optimize enhancement, management, and public use. Assists with annual property inventory and advises items that need to be turned in to surplus. Procures/requests necessary equipment and supplies for WMAs/refuges. Recommends policies for the management and public utilization of fish and wildlife resources on coastal WMAs/refuges. As appropriate, monitor progress of infrastructure projects and contracts on WMAs/refuges. Prepare/oversee the development of activity reports, technical correspondence and data, and equipment usage logs. Attend meetings, conferences, and workshops for work-plan coordination and to obtain/provide continuing education and/or safety training. Recommends appropriate staff schedules and location to ensure successful and timely implementation of projects and/or programs. Participate on interview panels for prospective staff.
10% Infrastructure and Equipment Maintenance
Coordinate with Biologist Supervisor and Technician Supervisor on activities as they pertain to maintenance, repair and construction projects. This may involve water control structures, trails, roads, parking areas, campsites, facilities, workshops, storage buildings, water vessels, lawnmowers, tractors, UTVs, engines, etc. and include tasks such as mowing, grading, ditching, cleaning, etc.
5% Outreach/Miscellaneous
Interacts with members of the public and press regarding natural resources and wildlife management. Provides information pertaining to the coastal WMAs/refuges to civic and public groups as it pertains to management activities. Provides logistical support to civic groups, and school groups for outreach events; and assist state, federal, and local government agencies on project field visits. Assist visiting research personnel when needed. Represent the Department at public forums which include conservation, sportsmen, and commercial organizations as well as other public agencies. Completes other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
