Summary You will serve as a NUCLEAR ENGINEER in the Fluid Systems and Mechanical Engineering Division, Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD, Detachment, Kings Bay, GA. Responsibilities You will develop plans and provide technical direction over complex operations involved in the maintenance and installation of reactor plant systems and components on a nuclear-powered vessel. You will carry out a continuing review of the engineering and production work to ensure that the requirements for propulsion plant and related work are met. You will recommend design and process modifications to eliminate malfunctions or improve performance. You will recommend necessary facilities, instruments and training necessary for future projects. You will discuss and resolve operational and maintenance problems with ships and shipyard personnel, exchanging information with engineers and scientists engaged in related work. You will represent the shipyard in dealing with outside activities and representatives in all matters pertaining to assigned projects. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications GS-12 Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying concepts, principles, techniques and practices of nuclear engineering such as reactor materials, metallurgy, reactor physics, heat transfers, hydraulics, stress and mathematics. Experience acting as a technical consultant on projects relating to the overhaul, repair and testing of nuclear, fluid and mechanical systems and components. Experience reviewing all necessary technical documents, planning and carrying out assignments and making engineering interpretations, judgments and decisions on matters without clear precedents GS-11 Experience applying theory, principles, techniques and practices of nuclear engineering related to the overhaul, repair and testing of nuclear, fluid and mechanical systems and components. Experience resolving unusual nuclear engineering problems, providing or exchanging authoritative information and opinion with other engineers and technical personnel. Experience applying functions and objectives of the nuclear power program of the department. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
