OVERVIEW: Perform highly responsible professional legal and quasi-judicial work in the field of workers' compensation. Conduct judicial hearings, make decisions, hear witnesses and counsel, examine briefs, interpret law, and make benefit determinations in workers' compensation matters.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION: Serve as a compensation judge in workers' compensation hearings so that disputed claims and issues are fairly resolved by ruling on admissibility of evidence, questioning and determining credibility of witnesses, maintaining decorum, and ruling on evidentiary and procedural matters. Develop records so that final determinations are substantiated by ensuring that proceedings are properly recorded, administering oaths and affirmations, issuing subpoenas, and receiving all relevant and competent evidence. Make benefit determinations so that claims and issues are settled based upon findings of fact and in accordance with workers' compensation law by finding the facts of each matter, determining the correct statutory authority for benefits requested, conducting necessary legal research and issuing Findings and Order. Maintain expertise in workers' compensation law, rules of evidence, and judicial procedures so that hearings are conducted fairly, statutes applied properly, and legal licensure is maintained. Decisions are subject to review only by appeal to the Workers' Compensation Court of Appeals and by the Minnesota Supreme Court by writ of certiorari.

Minimum Qualifications:

Juris Doctor Degree.

Current licensure in good standing to practice law in the State of Minnesota.

Legal writing sample no more than 8 pages in length to be submitted to Belle Sarff at belle.sarff@state.mn.us no later than August 25, 2025.

At least five years of full-time experience as a judge, mediator, or trial attorney, with (1) the majority of that practice devoted to the field of workers' compensation; or (2) in a comparable professional role that demonstrates extensive expertise in the field of workers' compensation law in Minnesota or a state with a comparable workers' compensation statute.

Preferred Qualifications:

Arbitration or mediation training and certification.

Proven legal research skills.

A spoken/written language other than English sufficient to communicate with those coming before the Court in their native language.

Cultural responsiveness to work effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures demonstrating a commitment to community and public service.

Physical Requirements

Maintain a stationary position for a prolonged period of the day.

Move and/or transport file boxes or comparable items on an occasional basis.
