Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Systems Engineer. As a vital member of the ES Division you will contribute to the implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations, as well as supporting existing systems, modifications and customers occupying the facilities. This position supports the Weapons Facilities Operations (WFO) portfolio consisting of nuclear, accelerator and non-nuclear facilities, spanning half of the laboratory's footprint. As an Accelerator Systems Engineer in this area, you will directly support facilities with a direct impact on LANL's stockpile stewardship mission. Daily tasks include but are not limited to response to emerging facility issues, configuration management including facility technical baseline management, electrical/pressure safety support, reviewing designs for facility modification, and providing system health reporting.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1/Engineer 2 level depending on the skills and/or experience of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Engineer 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)
As an Accelerator Systems Engineer with Engineering Services, you will serve as the owner's representative for engineering for your assigned facilities. You will concurrently interface with design teams, maintenance, and operations, shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing portfolio. Your day-to-day functions in this role are:
Support accelerator facilities safety systems
Obtain, evaluate and compare equipment selections from manufacturer's representatives
Provide control and maintenance of the technical baseline of the facility equipment while ensuring facility system configuration is being managed effectively using a risk-based graded approach
Assist in defining maintenance requirements involving corrective maintenance and the tracking and trending of system performance, provide information for preventative maintenance scheduling, and perform regular facility system walkdowns and Facility Health Reports
Review design outputs for impact to technical baseline and Master Equipment Lists (MEL), and control and maintain the MEL for assigned facilities
Coordinate with Pressure Safety Officer (PSO) on facility pressure safety systems
Review Integrated Work Documents (IWDs), provide technical interface to existing facility systems and components, and support configuration management
Be a source of expert knowledge of assigned facilities and facility safety documentation, and navigate and implement prevailing industry codes and standards
Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management in accordance with the LANL Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), LANL Administrative Procedures (APs), LANL Master Specifications, and related Codes and Standards
Engineer 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)
In addition to duties listed above, the level 2 role includes the following job duties:
Develop skills to independently run all engineering facets of a project from scoping to construction to sustainment
Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services
Facilitate technical growth of the engineering team
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Fundamental knowledge of:
Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices
Engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
Engineering work planning and control methods, maintenance techniques and construction techniques
Project and process engineering practices
Awareness and increasing experience in the implementation of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides, as well as industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline
Education/Experience for Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience. Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience for Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
Electrical engineering degree and/or experience with facility electrical systems is strongly preferred
Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes
Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures
Desired Qualifications: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
