Director, Victim-Witness Program

Starting Salary: $50,000 - (Commensurate with Experience)

The Smyth County Commonwealths Attorneys Office is seeking an

experienced, compassionate, and highly motivated individual to lead the

countys Victim-Witness Program. This position plays a vital role in

supporting victims and witnesses through the criminal justice process and

in ensuring compliance with the Victim Witness Rights Act (19.2-11.01,

Code of Virginia).

Position Overview:

The Director of the Victim-Witness Program is responsible for the day-to-day

management and strategic development of the program. This includes

supervising one part-time victim advocate, coordinating multidisciplinary

teams (including law enforcement, social services, and advocacy

professionals), and serving as a key point of contact for victims of child

abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence.

The Director also manages program budgeting, grant development and

administration, and prepares detailed reports, statistics, and other

documentation for state and local reporting. The role requires excellent

interpersonal skills, professionalism, and a sincere commitment to victim

advocacy.

Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the Victim-Witness Program in accordance with

Virginia law and Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)

guidelines

Provide trauma-informed support to crime victims and witnesses, both

inside and outside of court

Collaborate closely with law enforcement, the Department of Social

Services, and partner agencies on multidisciplinary teams

Assist with court preparation and accompany victims through legal

proceedings

Oversee and administer grant funding and program expenditures

Maintain compliance and reporting standards set by DCJS

Represent the program and Smyth County in state and regional

trainings, meetings, and professional forums

The Director reports operationally to the Commonwealths Attorney and

administratively to the County Administrator.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelors degree (required); advanced degree or relevant certifications

preferred

Experience in victim advocacy, human services, criminal justice, or a

related field

Demonstrated ability to manage relationships across diverse

stakeholders

Knowledge of Virginias legal system and victim rights legislation

Experience with grant writing and program administration

Compassion, empathy, and strong communication skills

Desire to serve the public and make a meaningful difference in the lives

of crime victims
