POSITION SUMMARY:

Assists and supports the translation of the nursing philosophy of Neshaminy Manor (the facility) into nursing practice by participating in the planning, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of the nursing care delivery system. This position takes on some of the responsibilities of the Nursing Department as designated; also provides assistance in the functioning of the department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Takes the role of the Director of Nursing (DON) in her/his absence.

Assists and participates in the development, organization and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures and standards of nursing care.

Confers with the DON in assessing the quality of nursing care being delivered and recognizes the need for improving or changing nursing practices.

Reviews the 24 Hour Report and makes rounds on the nursing units to evaluate resident care, progress of individual employees, monitors nursing practices, and assists personnel with nursing and educational needs.

Identifies and recommends areas for education and communicates this to the Education Director.

Remains cognizant of legal aspects of nursing practice as well as government regulations and demonstrates this in teaching, supervision and evaluation of resident care.

Assists with on-site evaluation of employee performance and assesses need for progressive disciplinary action. Participates in employee conferences as requested by the DON.

Is concerned with the safety of all residents in order to minimize the potential for fire and accidents. Ensures the facility adheres to the legal, safety, health, fire and sanitation codes by being familiar with his/her role in carrying out the facility's fire, safety and disaster plans and by being familiar with current MSDS.

Collaborates with the Staffing Office to ensure adequate staffing necessary to deliver nursing services (keeps within predetermined par level staffing ratios).

Acts as on-call nursing clinical resources person and takes week-end Administrative coverage as scheduled. This may entail the ADON to be present in the facility.

Communicates all pertinent information and directives from the DON to all Nursing Supervisors and Unit Managers. Supports the Unit Managers and Nursing Supervisors in implementing directives to ensure quality resident care.

Reinforces policy and procedure with all staff as needed.

Assists the DON to prepare nursing staff for regulatory inspections and develop plans for compliance.

Participates in internal audit of nursing practice and in the plan of correction when deficits are identified. Supports the Unit Manager to ensure continual compliance on the units.

Compiles reports to be submitted to the DON.

Establishes and facilitates effective employer/employee relations. Works with Risk Management regarding worker compensation cases.

Delegates duties to nursing personnel as necessary.

Collaborates with the Unit Manager to assure MDS, RAPS and Care Plans are completed in a timely manner and comply with all nursing home/regulatory policies.

Is a resource/liaison between departments for clinical issues.

Acts as a liaison for residents, families, visitors and staff to resolve concerns and issues, always with the goal of resident satisfaction.

Participates in the quality improvement program of the facility.

Participates in the interview process involving RNs, LPNs and CNAs.

Assists with the development, direction, participation and evaluation of the orientation program for nursing personnel.

Attends Nursing Administration, Program Directors, Quality Improvement meetings and other meetings as necessary.

Provide patientcare.

Puts resident service first by ensuring that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in caring and compassionate atmosphere that recognizes the individuals' needs and rights.

Carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation may be required which fall within the scope of nursing practice.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Graduate of accredited School of Nursing with current RN licensure in state of Pennsylvania required.

Minimum of three years full-time or equivalent clinical experience is required and a minimum of two years of clinical experience in long-term care nursing with one year in a management/administrative or supervisory capacity is preferred.

Must be able to demonstrate leadership skills, organization and provide a positive attitude, direction and discipline for the nursing department.

Must have thorough knowledge of nursing theory, techniques and practices.

Must be able to develop and implement programs, policies and procedures, etc. that are necessary to providing quality care.

Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.

Must have considerable knowledge of medication.

Must possess the ability to work independently, problem solve and make decisions as necessary.

Must possess the ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.

Must have the ability to supervise nursing functions in an effective manner.
