Examples of Duties
Tigard Police Officers perform a wide range of law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrol and investigation. Sworn officers enforce state and local laws, regulations and ordinances and perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:
Responds to a variety of radio calls including theft, domestic disturbances, welfare checks and CPR calls. Investigates crashes, deaths, and criminal complaints. Makes arrests and issues citations when required.
Patrols roads, highways, businesses and residential areas of the City. Enforces applicable criminal and traffic laws. Prepares case records and reports. Participates in the prosecution of cases in court.
Serves criminal warrants, applicable court orders, and subpoenas.
Accomplishes the Police Department Mission to "to protect and serve all who live, play and work in Tigard."
Minimum Qualifications
Applicant must be at least 21 years old and possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oregon Driver's License. No felony or domestic violence related misdemeanor convictions. Applicant must have: ability to learn and apply laws, statutes, regulations, ordinances and procedures; ability to give credible testimony in a court of law; ability to operate a motor vehicle and assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws and department policies; ability to prepare accurate, concise, informative and grammatically correct reports; ability to understand and act upon complex oral and written instructions; ability to deal courteously and firmly with the public, other agencies and all levels of City staff.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school or GED. Previous experience in law enforcement and/or college level law enforcement coursework is desirable but not required.

Supplemental Information
TESTING PROCESS: Only candidates who have taken and passed the written law enforcement test through National Testing Network (NTN) are eligible to apply. If you have not passed this test, please visit https://nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/index.cfm to apply. Based on the results of the written test, candidates may be invited to participate in the following:
-Criminal History Review
-Physical agility test (ORPAT)
Suitability evaluation
-Oral Board
-Background investigation
-Interview with Chief of Police
-Psychological evaluation
-Medical examination
-Drug screen
Only applicants who have passing written test scores on file and who have completed the online application will be invited to schedule an oral board.
If you have not yet taken the ORPAT, we will make arrangements for you to do so after the oral boards.
Additional Information: The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) requires law enforcement officers pass ORPAT to be certified. ORPAT is a hybrid physical ability/job sample physical abilities assessment process designed to evaluate officer candidates on essential physical capacities required to satisfactorily perform job duties. We use ORPAT as a screening tool to help select the most qualified applicants to continue in our application process for officer positions.

All candidates must have passing ORPAT scores on file prior to an offer of employment. Applicants may provide ORPAT scores from another agency by uploading those scores during the application process. Applicants who have not passed the ORPAT may submit physical abilities test scores from other states to begin the application process and will be provided the opportunity to participate in the ORPAT after oral boards.
