The Accountant I/II responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting in the maintenance of financial records including the reconciliation of general ledger accounts; handling complex and high-volume bank reconciliations; investigating and resolving complex discrepancies; processing and analyzing financial data in preparation of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports; and participation in various department core functions such as annual budget, year-end audit as well as periodic assistance in the review and update of financial policies and procedures. Special projects may be assigned on an as needed basis.
Duties
Financial Reporting: Prepares and analyzes the City's and its component units' financial reports. Performs statistical computations, financial analyses, interpretations, projections and recommendations to facilitate informed management decisions. Participates in annual audit through preparation of audit schedules and other analytical projects. Prepares various transactions, statements, schedules, charts and reports.
Financial Review: Conducts monthly review of all funds and department balances including: General Fund, MDD, BAWA, Water/Sewer, Sanitation, etc. Provides accounting assistance and guidance to City departments.
Audit/Analysis: Prepares schedules for annual audit in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles and consistent with the City's external auditor. Performs various audits for department systems and processes to recommend areas for improvement.
Accounting Review/Analysis: Reconciles and balances bank statements with general ledger activity, investigates and resolves discrepancies, and prepares for approval standard and adjusting journal entries to comply with existing policies and regulatory requirements. Assists with the review and update of financial policies and procedures.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or institution in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
OR
An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred:
Experience in governmental Finance or Accounting.
Significant bank reconciliation experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess strong interpersonal skills and have ability to effectively communicate and maintain effective working relationships with employees, department directors, city management and elected officials. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Detail oriented and must be able to accomplish duties in a timely, accurate and efficient manner. Must have a positive attitude and must be able to learn new tasks quickly. Required to be a team builder/player, work independently without constant supervision, multi-task, troubleshoot and problem solve. Strong working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and accounting software is essential. A general knowledge of accounting and financial reporting is expected.
