The Core Networking team is looking for a Network Development Engineer to join our Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) team. As a Network Development Engineer, you will be responsible for building, deploying and scaling the Amazon networks that support AWS, customers, and other business units, across multiple global datacenters.
AWS Core Networking is focused on building Data Centers and the network that allows Data Centers to function efficiently. We own the solutions that allow racks to be aggregated and Data Centers to be interconnected. Core Networking's goal is to balance efficiency, performance and reliability to allow customers access to their applications and data.
Key job responsibilities
Network Development Engineers perform high quality network and/or systems operations, deployments, scaling, technology refresh, sustaining engineering, best practices application, optimization, internal/external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation.
Create and implement changes on the network.
Work closely with our automation teams in defining the tools that allow us to scale at a higher volume.
Lead network projects in the areas of network sustaining engineering, network deployment/implementation, network scaling, technology refresh, best practices application, and/or network optimization.
Sustain Amazon Web Services' next generation networks for significant AWS customers by providing critical network support to diagnose, mitigate impact, and resolve large-scale networking events.
Operate and troubleshoot network routing, interconnectivity, platforms, performance, and configurations issues; including necessary low level application interaction, Unix systems, and new age networking software tools.
Drive and support innovation from Top of Rack to the Network Border and everything in between.
Partner with our broader Network/Infrastructure organization in the areas of network engineering, configurations standards, and tools.
Work closely with our Network/Systems/Software Engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products, as well as assist with deployment and sustaining of networking software tools.
Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies.
Deliver simple, sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes.
Collaborate with highest tier escalation engineers/resolvers.
Create and review documentation and process regarding network implementation/deployments, recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.
A day in the life
On an everyday basis as part of our team, you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers' requirement on interconnect solutions. You'll work backwards to devise hardware solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with sister teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way, while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.

About the team
AWS NFE (Network Fabric Engineering) owns datacenter network services that provide unconstrained connectivity to our customers, such as EC2, EBS, S3 and Amazon CDO Services. They own the networks internal to the datacenters end to end, including scaling and operational functions, for both traditional datacenters. They also own newer AWS offerings such as Outposts and Local Zones.

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience in a large-scale network environment
1+ years experience in a network focused hands-on technical role working with IP routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large scale data center and/or WAN network environments.
1+ years experience in Python or other language
Preferred Qualifications
Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Server Load Balancers, Firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.
Knowledge of network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills; specifically, network performance analysis.
Experience working with customers to diagnose a problem, and work toward resolution.
Strong desire to build, ability to multitask, sense of ownership and urgency.
Strong Unix/Linux skills and ability to write scripts in Perl, Python, shell, C or C++ is highly desirable

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $102,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
