This position will be based out of our facility in Springfield, MA with periodic travel required to support other Smith & Wesson facilities.

Scope of the Job:

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will develop, test, and implement modern manufacturing equipment and processes into existing factories in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. The position will develop new manufacturing concepts based on the latest technologies, validate proof of concepts, and work with the manufacturing engineering team to implement these technologies into production. It will also collaborate with manufacturing launch of new or revised products to leverage advanced manufacturing methods. Priorities include cost reduction, quality improvement, problem resolution, project management and employee training.

Experience with CNC programming and processing new products through CNC machines is required!

Essential Responsibilities:

Performs research, design and development of advanced manufacturing processes, including production flow, assembly methods and production equipment.

Must be able to understand and interpret complex part drawings and understand product design intent.

Develop business case benefit proposals and present proposals to senior leadership.

Track project metric post launch to confirm target achievement and evaluate results.

Integrate multiple technologies together into production systems.

Integrate new technologies into existing production systems.

Use appropriate project management techniques to insure tools, gauges, fixtures, equipment, routings and CMM/CNC programs are fully defined, documented and implemented.

Performs product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement and efficiency improvement.

Must work effectively with external technical support, and continuously train internal staff.

Represents advanced manufacturing on cross-functional teams.

Ability to work in a team environment.

Works with minimal supervision, establish priority and meet scheduled completion dates.

Performs other related duties as assigned

Education and Experience:

Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree (BSME) or equivalent

5+ years' experience in an automated or semi-automated manufacturing environment (preferably in the firearms industry)

Strong understanding of lean principles

Experience in addressing needs and concerns of shop personnel in a manufacturing environment

Exceptional customer service skills

Competencies and Skills:

Must have working command of the English language

Must be able to read, write and interpret the English language

Must be able to communicate in English verbally and in writing (verbal instructions, written memos and instructions)

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint

SolidWorks and CAM knowledge is required

Robot and or PLC programming is a plus

CMM programming & PC-DMIS is a plus

Training Requirements:

Complete all necessary training as required by assigned department and position

Participate in and follow all company initiatives

Participate in continuous improvement projects (Kaizen events, 5S, etc.)

Physical Demands:

Must be able to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, reach, twist

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.

The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:

Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor

The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
