Position description
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering invites applications for two Assistant Professor of Teaching positions. These are permanent positions, analogous to a tenure-track position, with Academic Senate membership. Professors of Teaching serve as thought leaders in teaching practice and lead innovation and research in teaching for Samueli Engineering, including the adaptation of teaching and hands-on and design education for the age of AI, and increase student engagement. Professors of Teaching help maintain ABET accreditation of Samueli Engineering programs, including through processes of continuous improvement of teaching practice and curriculum. Participation in governance and management of the university's educational program through committee service, curriculum development, and administration is also important. The teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system. The department has an incredibly strong and passionate group of undergraduate and graduate students and is in an exciting faculty growth phase in high-impact areas of research and education.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
A Ph.D. or M.S. in MAE or a closely related field.
Documented excellence in teaching.
Ability and interest in teaching a broad range of courses in MAE.
Experience with curriculum development.
Demonstrated efforts to lead innovation and reinvention in curriculum and teaching practice.
A strong record of scholarship in MAE education or MAE.

The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
