Job Description
The 2nd Shift Quality Technician plays a key role in ensuring that all products meet established quality standards through thorough inspection and collaboration with production operators. This position focuses on performing manual checks, operating coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), and supporting quality assurance and quality control activities during the second shift in a small, highly collaborative manufacturing environment. The role requires a self-directed individual who can work independently in the quality department while maintaining strong communication with the production team.
Responsibilities
Perform detailed product inspections using manual checks on inspection tables to verify conformance to specifications and quality standards.
Operate CMM equipment to conduct dimensional inspections; programming is not required, but accurate and consistent operation is essential.
Conduct first article inspections to ensure initial production runs meet required quality and blueprint specifications.
Review and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to understand product requirements and inspection criteria.
Carry out routine quality checks and quality control activities throughout the shift to maintain consistent product quality.
Support quality assurance processes, including inspection documentation and reporting of nonconformances when identified.
Perform PPAP-related inspection tasks as needed, ensuring parts meet customer and internal requirements, even though extensive PPAP experience is not mandatory.
Work independently as the sole quality representative on 2nd shift, making sound decisions without relying on constant direction from a manager.
Collaborate closely with production operators and the shift supervisor on the floor to address quality issues and provide feedback on inspection results.
Communicate clearly and professionally with team members to resolve quality concerns and promote continuous improvement.
Maintain a clean and organized inspection area and handle measurement tools and equipment with care and accuracy.
Follow established quality procedures, work instructions, and safety guidelines throughout all inspection activities.
Essential Skills
Hands-on experience performing quality inspection and quality checks in a manufacturing or production environment.
Ability to operate CMM equipment for inspection purposes, with no requirement for programming but strong competency in machine operation.
Proficiency in manual inspection techniques, including using measurement tools on inspection tables to verify product dimensions.
Experience with first article inspection processes and documentation.
Understanding of quality assurance and quality control principles and practices.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
Familiarity with PPAP-related inspection activities, even if extensive PPAP experience is not required.
Strong ability to work independently and make decisions without constant supervision.
Effective people skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with operators and supervisors on the production floor.
Attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy in all inspection tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Background in typical quality functions such as inspecting, manual checks, PPAPs, and CMM operations.
Experience in quality assurance, quality control, and quality inspection within a small or collaborative team environment.
Comfort working as the sole quality technician on a shift while coordinating with a small group of production staff.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with cross-functional team members.
Self-motivated mindset with the ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks effectively during the shift.
Work Environment
This position is fully on-site in a small, close-knit manufacturing environment where culture fit and cross collaboration are highly valued. The 2nd Shift Quality Technician works as the only member of the quality department during the second shift, alongside approximately six production team members and one supervisor on the floor. The role involves frequent interaction with operators and the supervisor while performing inspections at an inspection table and operating CMM equipment. Hours are typically 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Fridays.
