Overview
As a Field Manager, Directional Drilling and Underground Construction, you will oversee underground
telecommunications construction projects, directional drilling operations, locating activities, and field crews. You will be
responsible for ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with customer
specifications, applicable permits, and quality standards.
This position requires hands-on experience with horizontal directional drilling and locating equipment, along with proven
experience managing crews, coordinating field operations, and resolving construction challenges. You believe in doing
the job right, delivering high-quality work, and supporting your teams in the field.
Responsibilities
As a Field Manager, Directional Drilling and Underground Construction, you will:
? Manage daily field operations for underground telecommunications and fiber construction projects.
? Direct and support directional drilling, locating, excavation, conduit installation, fiber construction, restoration, and
related field activities.
? Supervise foremen, drill operators, locators, equipment operators, and underground construction crews.

? Plan crew assignments, equipment needs, production schedules, and daily work activities.
? Monitor project progress, productivity, quality, and schedule performance.
? Operate or provide technical guidance on horizontal directional drilling equipment when needed.
? Provide field support for locating drill heads, utilities, bore paths, and underground facilities.
? Review utility locates and coordinate potholing or daylighting to verify underground facilities before drilling or
excavation begins.
? Confirm that required permits, utility locates, maps, drawings, and construction documents are complete and available
at the job site.
? Read and interpret construction prints, utility maps, drawings, bore profiles, diagrams, and project specifications.
? Ensure drilling and underground construction activities comply with applicable city, county, state, customer, and
company requirements.
Inspect work in progress and completed construction to confirm workmanship meets project and customer
specifications.
? Ensure the safety of employees, the public, and existing underground facilities.
? Conduct or support jobsite safety meetings, job hazard analyses, preconstruction reviews, and daily work planning.
? Enforce company safety procedures and ensure crews use appropriate personal protective equipment.
? Coordinate traffic control, pedestrian control, worksite setup, site cleanup, and restoration activities.
Identify field conflicts, production delays, utility concerns, and safety risks, and implement appropriate corrective
actions.
? Communicate project updates, staffing needs, schedule changes, and field concerns to operations leadership and
other project stakeholders.
? Coordinate with customers, inspectors, utility representatives, subcontractors, municipalities, and internal departments
as required.
? Train, coach, and develop field employees, foremen, drill operators, and locators.
? Address employee performance, attendance, safety, and operational concerns in accordance with company policies.
? Promote accountability, teamwork, quality, and professional conduct across assigned crews.
? Assist with interviewing, onboarding, and training field employees as needed.
? Maintain accurate documentation related to production, safety, equipment, materials, incidents, and completed work.
? Monitor equipment condition and ensure required inspections and preventive maintenance are completed.
? Coordinate minor equipment repairs and report significant maintenance needs.
? Ensure company vehicles, drilling equipment, locating equipment, trailers, and tools are operated safely and properly.
? Operate construction equipment, vehicles, and machinery when appropriately trained, certified, and directed.
? Perform additional duties as assigned to support field operations and project completion.
Qualifications
Minimum of three years of horizontal directional drilling experience.
? Previous experience operating directional drilling equipment and locating equipment.
? Demonstrated experience supervising or managing underground construction crews.
? Working knowledge of underground telecommunications construction and fiber-optic builds.
? Experience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar horizontal directional drilling equipment.
? Experience with commonly used locating systems and underground utility locating practices.
? Ability to read and interpret utility locates, construction maps, drawings, bore profiles, diagrams, and project
specifications.
? Knowledge of potholing, daylighting, bore planning, conduit installation, restoration, and underground utility protection.
? Understanding of applicable city, county, state, and utility clearance requirements.
? Strong commitment to workplace safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
? Ability to manage multiple crews, priorities, and job sites effectively.
? Ability to lead employees, communicate expectations, provide coaching, and resolve field issues professionally.
? Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
? Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets company requirements.
? Ability to pass applicable pre-employment screening requirements.
? Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
? Ability to travel between assigned job sites.
? Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, or extended hours based on project and operational needs.
Preferred
? Five or more years of underground telecommunications construction experience.
? Previous experience as a field manager, construction manager, general foreman, or underground construction
supervisor.
? OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
? First Aid and CPR certification.
? Competent Person training applicable to excavation and trenching.
? Experience overseeing multiple directional drilling crews or underground fiber construction projects.
? Experience coordinating with inspectors, municipalities, utility owners, customers, and subcontractors.
? Experience tracking production, labor, equipment, materials, and project documentation
? Compensation: Target salary in the mid-$70,000s
? Schedule: Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
? Work arrangement: On-site daily; no travel required
? Team leadership: Responsible for overseeing an approximately 15-person crew
? Preferred language skill: Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
? Vehicle: Company vehicle assigned for business use
