Summary This position is located in the Laundry Section of the Environmental Management Service of the VA Healthcare System located in Fargo ND. The Motor Vehicle Operator transports textiles between the hospital and the Textile Care Processing Facility approximately five to six times daily. Responsibilities Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures; Performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment; Ensures strict adherence to federal, state, and local codes concerning health, safety, and the environment as applicable within the performance of his/her duties; Drives a 12,000 lb. Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) truck for deliveries and collections; Delivers clean linen and collect dirty linen from the hospital each morning; Delivers and collects linen from (1 to 3) outside clinics and meets delivery and collection timelines daily; Maintains daily records to include weight of clean and soiled textiles for deliveries and collections; Fills linen carts and baskets from the flow rack, according to a diagram to prepare them for delivery the next day; Keeps detailed records of all linen coming in and going out for delivery the next day; Hangs uniforms and organizes them according to the assigned valet number placed in all uniforms; Turns on pumps and steam, and starting the 400 lb. washing machine; Clears conveyer and put items on flow rack; Assists with the annual linen inventory count; Folds linen as time allows; Performing related duties as assigned. Qualifications Physical Effort: The incumbent must be free of physical handicaps that would adversely affect his/her ability to operate assigned equipment in a safe and proper manner. He/She must constantly stand, walk, turn, bend and lift in the performance of assigned duties. The incumbent must be able to push and pull heavy cargoes on and off the vehicle to include linen carts weighing up to 800 lb. and extreme caution must be exercised in moving them to avoid injury or damage. Will be required to manually lift a hydraulic gate that weighs more than 50 lb. when delivering or picking up linen at sharing agreement locations that do not have a loading dock access. Will be required to manually lift and position 50 lb. - 100 lb. manual dock plates at both clean and soiled laundry dock areas. Must be able to lift and remove chains and tires that can weigh about 75 lb. Working Conditions: Work is performed under generally adequate conditions in lighted, heated and ventilated areas, but may be exposed at times to extreme temperatures, excrete, disagreeable odors and chemicals. Is exposed to constant noise from moving equipment and danger exists from working near steam pipes, moving equipment, chemicals and close quarters. Incumbent is required to work outside in all @types of weather and weather-related conditions and drive in all @types of traffic conditions and road @types. This includes navigating in congested traffic, use of interstate and highways, and sometimes rural routes due to remote locations of some customers. Incumbent must drive, operate equipment and move cargo in extreme weather conditions such as cold, heat, rain, snow, ice, etc. Incumbent is subject to serious accidents while on public roads as well as cuts bruises and broken bones because of accidents while driving or when loading/unloading of vehicle. Incumbent must be safety minded and prevents injury to oneself, patients, staff, and visitors. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
