Site Supervisor
Location: Flandreau, South Dakota
Reports To: Director of Model Production
Supervises: Animal Technicians / Farm Animal Clinical Staff
Position Summary
We are seeking a Site Supervisor to lead daily animal care, research activities, and farm operations at our Flandreau, SD facility. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, research quality, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
The Site Supervisor will oversee animal care and research protocols, supervise and train staff, support surgical and clinical procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and coordinate facility activities. All animal care and research activities must be conducted in accordance with applicable USDA, AAALAC, FDA, NIH, GLP, and other relevant regulatory requirements and guidelines .
Key Responsibilities
Manage daily animal care activities, including feeding, cleaning, breeding, farrowing, weaning, health observation, and general husbandry.
Supervise, direct, and perform research protocols, including body condition scoring, weight collection, therapeutic dosing, necropsies, and anesthesia administration.
Manage and perform advanced research procedures, including blood collection and processing, anesthesia monitoring, and terminal tissue harvests.
Identify and collect required tissues, arteries, veins, and organs using knowledge of swine anatomy and protocol-specific requirements.
Perform and/or support electrocardiograms (ECG), electroretinograms (ERG), and other research procedures.
Conduct and document behavioral characterization activities, including T-maze, CPP assays, temperament testing, open-field assays, balance beam testing, laser testing, gait walks, and FitBark monitoring.
Assist with genotyping and embryo handling.
Perform and support sterile fetal harvests and C-sections.
Coordinate the collection of tissue, samples, and research data for internal and external research organizations.
Manage the daily responsibilities and workflow of Farm Animal Clinical staff.
Supervise, train, and mentor Animal Technicians and other Farm Animal Clinical employees.
Maintain detailed and accurate records related to animal treatment, observations, research activities, and inventory.
Manage facility maintenance activities and maintain appropriate supply inventory.
Work collaboratively with team members to complete daily animal care, clinical, and research responsibilities.
Participate in the facility's weekend rotation, generally every third weekend , which may include holidays.
Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Science, or another relevant technical field, or equivalent related experience .
Training or hands-on experience in laboratory procedures and animal care guidelines.
Previous experience caring for neonatal piglets and adult swine.
Experience performing or supporting animal research procedures is strongly preferred.
Previous supervisory, team-lead, or staff-training experience is preferred.

Working Conditions
Most work is performed within swine housing and animal research facilities.
The position requires regular interaction with neonatal piglets and adult swine.
Moderate physical exertion may be required for animal handling, facility maintenance, equipment movement, and transportation of animals.
Weekend and holiday work is required as part of the established rotation.
