Location: Los Angeles, CA - Onsite

Schedule: Monday-Friday, approximately 9:00 AM-5:30 PM; some flexibility available

Assignment: Temporary maternity leave coverage, potentially beginning September 29 through February

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Graduate Academic Advisor to provide temporary coverage within a university School of Film & Television. This individual will support graduate students throughout their academic journey, providing individualized advising, guidance on degree requirements, registration support, and assistance navigating university policies and resources.

The Academic Advisor will work closely with the Assistant Dean, graduate program directors, faculty advisors, the Registrar, Admissions, and other university departments to promote student success and ensure students remain on track toward degree completion.

Key Responsibilities

Provide individualized academic advising and guidance to graduate students regarding degree requirements, registration, academic policies, and graduation planning.

Counsel prospective and newly admitted graduate students regarding program requirements, course selection, and registration.

Prepare and maintain graduation plans and assist students in monitoring progress toward degree completion.

Support students with academic petitions and transactions, including course substitutions, unit overloads, degree audit exceptions, and other requests.

Assist students in identifying academic opportunities, establishing goals, and developing plans to achieve those goals.

Partner with faculty advisors, graduate directors, and university leadership on student success and retention initiatives.

Coordinate with the Registrar and other university departments regarding student records, degree clearance, academic holds, and related matters.

Assist faculty with questions regarding student records, degree audits, academic holds, and advising processes.

Support graduate student orientation, admissions, enrollment, and other student-focused events.

Help coordinate co-curricular programs and activities designed to enhance graduate student engagement and academic success.

Track student progress and attrition and assist with preparing reports for university leadership.

Maintain accurate and confidential student records and documentation.

Assist with special projects and additional student services initiatives as needed

Requirements

Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in Student Services, Academic Advising, Higher Education, or a related field, preferably within an educational environment.

Previous experience supporting college or university students strongly preferred.

Experience with Banner (PROWL) or another academic records/student information system required.

Knowledge of academic advising, registration procedures, admissions processes, graduation requirements, and university policies.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and student needs simultaneously.

Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.

Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and university leadership.

Strong discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential student information.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced academic environment.
