Electrical Engineer - Medical Device Product Development (Duluth, GA)
Our client, an established leader in medical devices, is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer (EE) to drive product development of electromechanical medical devices, with significant emphasis on hands-on design, documentation, and validation using SolidWorks. This is a direct-hire role focused on developing the electronics for advanced handheld orthopedic surgical instruments-including powered drills, saws, and cutting tools-from concept through FDA submission.
Position Summary:
We are searching for a highly experienced Senior Electrical Engineer with a strong background in the design and development of battery-powered, electromechanical medical devices. The ideal candidate will play a key role in defining and developing the complete electrical architecture, embedded programming, and powertrain for handheld surgical tools. SolidWorks proficiency is required for product development documentation. Candidates with experience in automated machines, production systems, pick-and-place equipment, or similar high-performance assemblies are encouraged to apply, but direct experience in medical device development is essential.
This Electrical Engineer will design and improving the electronics inside specialized power tools that doctors use for surgeries-think high-tech drills or saws used in orthopedic (bone) operations. You'll be part of the team that invents, tests, and documents these products to make sure they're safe, reliable, and meet strict medical standards. We're seeking someone highly-skilled in Solid works who has built complex electromechanical medical device parts-who knows how to turn ideas into real, working tools that doctors can safely use on patients.
Primary Responsibilities:
Serve as the technical lead for electrical systems development on battery-powered orthopedic surgical instruments.
Own the electrical design process from requirements definition, schematic design, simulation and layout (using SolidWorks), to proto@type build and validation.
Develop and document designs for circuit boards, motor control systems, rechargeable battery integration, and embedded hardware/firmware using SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
Lead selection and integration of BLDC motors, battery management systems, high-current power electronics, and safety testing.
Develop control algorithms for sensored and sensorless BLDC systems, including current, torque, and speed controls.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, firmware, quality, regulatory) to ensure robust documentation and compliance with FDA and ISO 13485 standards.
Lead and support risk assessments (DFMEA, fault analysis), design verification and validation, and transition to manufacturing.
Mentor junior engineers, provide technical leadership, and manage supplier relationships for motors, batteries, and electronics.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related field.
10+ years of hands-on electrical engineering product development experience.
Demonstrated expertise in developing electromechanical medical devices (direct medical device experience required; not just automated machines or industrial equipment).
Proficiency in SolidWorks for electrical/electromechanical documentation and design.
Deep experience with BLDC motors, motor control, battery packs, BMS systems, and high-current power electronics.
Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills for complex system-level electromechanical challenges.
Strong lab skills including use of oscilloscopes, current probes, power supplies, and instrumentation for system validation.
Demonstrated knowledge of FDA design controls, ISO 13485 documentation, risk management, and medical device safety (IEC 60601).
Hands-on experience with sterilization and durability requirements for reusable instruments.
Preferred Experience:
Extensive background developing orthopedic surgical power tools (drills, saws, reamers, and related powered handpieces).
Experience with slotless/slotted BLDC motor technologies, high-current lithium battery packs, and medical-grade embedded systems.
Proven history of taking medical devices from concept to regulatory submission (FDA), design verification/validation, and commercial production.
Experience with product performance testing, competitive teardown analysis, and supplier management.
Prior work in clinical-grade device environments or with leading medical device OEMs is strongly desired.
Regulatory/Standards Knowledge:
Deep familiarity with FDA QMSR, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, IEC 62304, and standards relevant to rechargeable battery and device safety.
