Responsibilities Performs organizational maintenance and repair work on heavy duty equipment, hydraulic lifts, materials handling equipment, cargo transporter and truck cranes. Inspects and troubleshoots equipment, servicing and making repairs including moving worn or defective parts and replacing with new or rebuilt assemblies such as voltage regulators, starters brake assemblies, water pumps, alternators etc. Performs preventative maintenance and unscheduled maintenance repair work to automotive vehicles, trucks and trailers which are powered by gasoline and diesel engines, battery-electric motors or gas-electric power units. Removes and disassembles batteries to individual cells, check condition of cells and other hardware to determine replacement or cleaning required to return to serviceable conditions; cleans or replaces as appropriate. Operates light trucks to transport equipment and materials to and from job sites; operate forklifts to lift and transport heavy objects. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Must possess a valid state and government driver's license and be capable of operating required vehicles. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Work is performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time requiring frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Work may be performed on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles which may be cramped or require awkward positions. Items frequently lifted weigh up to 40 pounds. Strenuous effort is exerted to lift, push, pull, or position parts. Heavier items may require the assistance of fellow employees or lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Large vehicles may require the use of ladders or work platforms to accomplish the required task. Working Conditions: Work may be performed both inside and outside exposing the individual to drafts, changing temperatures, noise, and bad weather. Employees are exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, and fumes and subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Employees follow prescribed safety practices and use recommended safety equipment appropriate for the job and work area as directed by the supervisor. These safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: ear, eye, respiratory, foot protection, and protective clothing (gloves, apron, coveralls, etc.). Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment. Emergency Employee: The incumbent of this position has been designated as an emergency employee. The term "Emergency Employee" is used to designate those employees who must report to work in emergency situations. Emergency dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to these employees. The employees who occupy these positions may be required to report for duty in any situation that prevents significant numbers of employees in the local area from reporting for work on time or which requires agencies to close all or part of their activities.
