Summary The Electrician performs journeyman-level installation, modification, preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of facility electrical systems up to 480 volts at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. Work includes branch circuits, panels, switchgear, transformers, motor-control circuits, emergency-power and generator systems, lighting, and related components. Responsibilities The Electrician independently installs, modifies, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical systems and equipment through 480 volts, ensuring code-compliant, safe, and reliable operation throughout the medical center. Work includes preventive maintenance, system diagnostics, repairs, electrical upgrades, and documentation of all completed tasks. Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Performs preventive maintenance and inspection of electrical systems up to 480 volts, including branch circuits, panels, switchgear, transformers, motor-controls, emergency-power equipment, generator systems, lighting, and related components. Conducts scheduled inspections, electrical testing, documents results, corrects deficiencies, and ensures compliance with NEC, VA requirements, manufacturer specifications, and OSHA safety procedures. Installs and modifies circuits, receptacles, lighting systems, panels, switchgear, transformers, and power/control circuits following proper voltage, amperage, conduit, wire-size, and protection requirements. Performs maintenance and repair of circuits, panels, switchgear, motor-controls, emergency-power systems, and generator electrical components; resolves overloads, breaker failures, wiring issues, grounding, and load-balance deficiencies. Troubleshoots and tests electrical systems using wiring diagrams, manuals, and instruments such as multimeters, clamp ammeters, megohmmeters, and circuit analyzers; diagnoses complex or intermittent failures. Completes documentation and closes work requests in accordance with established procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: The work requires frequent and sustained physical exertion in accomplishing installations, modifications, troubleshooting, and repairs on facility electrical systems. The electrician performs work from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, rooftops, and other elevated or confined locations, often accessing components in hard-to-reach spaces behind equipment, above ceilings, and within mechanical rooms. These tasks require regular standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, crouching, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The electrician frequently lifts, carries, and moves tools, equipment, wire reels, conduit bundles, transformers, panels, and other electrical materials weighing over 40 pounds, and may be required to lift heavier items when installations or repairs demand it. Work routinely involves maneuvering materials of various sizes and shapes through tight or obstructed pathways, requiring considerable physical effort and coordination. Tasks may include pulling cable runs, positioning conduit, manipulating hand and power tools overhead, and maintaining steady physical balance while working on elevated structures. The sustained muscular effort, repetitive motions, and prolonged physical postures are integral to completing electrical assignments safely and effectively. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a variety of environments both indoors and outdoors throughout the medical center, including mechanical rooms, electrical vaults, patient-care areas, rooftops, exterior structures, corridors, and confined spaces with permit. The electrician is regularly exposed to hazards associated with energized electrical systems up to 480 volts, requiring strict adherence to lockout/tagout procedures, electrical-safety practices, and applicable NFPA, OSHA, and VA requirements. Work may occur in areas with poor lighting, fluctuating temperatures, limited ventilation, and varying levels of noise or vibration depending on proximity to operating mechanical or electrical equipment. Assignments may involve exposure to dust, dirt, grease, insulation particles, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces while working in ceilings, crawl spaces, mechanical chases, and older infrastructure. Outdoor tasks expose the electrician to weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, precipitation, and uneven or slippery surfaces. The employee may encounter fumes from equipment, odors from mechanical systems, and crowded workspaces where caution is required around moving carts, maintenance vehicles, and other trades. Elevated work areas, ladders, scaffolding, and platforms present risks of falls or injury if safe practices are not observed. Personal protective equipment is used as required, but the nature of the work routinely involves exposure to disagreeable or hazardous conditions inherent in maintaining and repairing electrical infrastructure in a hospital environment.
