Job Title: Mechanical Design EngineerJob Description
This role focuses on designing and developing mechanical assemblies for street sweepers, with a strong emphasis on sheet metal components and SolidWorks-based design. You will create detailed production drawings, verify parts on the manufacturing floor, and ensure that designs meet dimensional and quality standards throughout the fabrication and assembly process.
Responsibilities
Design mechanical assemblies for street sweepers using SolidWorks, with a particular focus on sheet metal components.
Produce accurate and detailed part drawings for mechanical assemblies, including bearings, races, cylinders, part casings, and structural body parts.
Visit the manufacturing floor regularly to take precise measurements of parts and assemblies and verify conformance to drawing and design standards.
Measure and inspect components to ensure designs meet specifications and functional requirements.
Identify, investigate, and troubleshoot issues that arise from designs during the manufacturing process, and implement appropriate design changes.
Collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to review designs, gather feedback, and support smooth production of heavy industrial equipment and mobile vehicles.
Apply knowledge of machining processes to ensure designs are manufacturable and optimized for production.
Contribute to chassis and product design improvements based on performance, manufacturability, and feedback from the shop floor.
Maintain clear documentation of design changes, measurements, and findings from floor inspections.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
At least 1 year of experience in mechanical design or a closely related engineering role.
Proficiency in SolidWorks or an equivalent 3D design platform, with the ability to quickly adapt to SolidWorks if experienced in another CAD system.
Hands-on sheet metal design experience, including the creation of detailed drawings for fabricated components.
Mechanical engineering knowledge related to mechanical design, product design, and chassis design.
Experience working in machining environments and understanding of machining processes and tolerances.
Ability to perform accurate measurements on the manufacturing floor to validate designs and ensure parts meet specifications.
Experience working with heavy industrial equipment, mobile vehicles, agricultural equipment, heavy trucks, or similar applications.
Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve design issues that occur during manufacturing.
Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting specific product lines in heavy industrial, mobile vehicle, agricultural, heavy truck, or related sectors.
Background in designing or supporting equipment such as sweepers or sewer-related machinery.
Familiarity with chassis design for mobile or heavy equipment.
Demonstrated ability to incorporate feedback from manufacturing and cross-functional teams into design improvements.
Comfort working in both office-based engineering environments and hands-on production settings.
Work Environment
The role operates in both an engineering design lab and a manufacturing floor environment. You will divide your time between working at a computer in a collaborative, feedback-driven design team and being on the shop floor taking measurements, observing machines, and working directly with manufacturing personnel. The plant offers flexible hours, with operations starting as early as 4:00 a.m.; a typical schedule runs from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some overtime as needed. The position is not strictly desk-based and requires regular movement between the lab and production areas, including working around heavy industrial equipment and mobile vehicles.
