Airport Security Specialist
SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs administrative and technical airport security duties in compliance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) AND Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for the Yampa Valley Regional Airport (YVRA). The position is primarily responsible for processing Security Identification Display Area (SIDA), Airport Operations Area (AOA), and Sterile badges, conducting background checks, maintaining security records, and supporting airport security training programs. Assists the Terminal Operations Supervisor/Airport Security Coordinator (ASC) and Assistant Airport Security Coordinator (AASC) in maintaining compliance with federal security requirements and may provide operational support or act in a limited capacity in their absence.
JOB DUTIES:
Primary Responsibilities:
Credentialing & Compliance
-Processes applications for airport badges, including verifying applicant identity, employment authorization, and need for access.
-Conducts background checks and vetting in accordance with TSA regulations and airport security program requirements.
-Issues, activates, deactivates, and tracks airport identification badges.
-Maintains the badging and access control system, ensuring accuracy, data integrity, and security of sensitive information.
-Maintains complete and auditable records for all badging and compliance activities.
-Maintains a high degree of confidentiality with security sensitive and personal information.
Training & Program Support
-Coordinates and provides required airport badge training and security awareness training for airport staff, tenants, and authorized personnel.
-Maintains training records and ensures compliance with required training intervals.
-Assists in preparing for TSA inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
Secondary Responsibilities (as may be needed)
Security Operations Support
-Supports airport security operations to ensure compliance with the Airport Security Plan (ASP), TSA regulations, and airport policies.
-May assist with monitoring access control, identification verification, and general compliance activities within secured areas.
-Observes and reports potential security or safety concerns, escalating issues to appropriate personnel as needed.
-May participate in routine inspections and checks of secured areas (e.g., SIDA, AOA, sterile areas) to ensure integrity and compliance.
-May assist with basic investigations related to access control violations, security incidents, or unattended items.
-May provide general security presence to help protect airport property, passengers, and staff, and support enforcement of applicable rules and regulations.
-Maintains logs, reports, and documentation; updates and retrieves information from tracking systems and databases as required.
-Communicates effectively via radio, phone, and written reports regarding security activities and incidents.
-Provides general customer service and basic information to passengers and visitors when appropriate.
Administrative & Technical Duties
-Maintains databases, logs, and filing systems related to badging, training, and compliance activities.
-Prepares reports, correspondence, and documentation related to security programs.
-Ensures proper handling and confidentiality of sensitive security information.
Operational Support / Acting Capacity
-Provides support during emergencies or unusual situations.
-May assist with coordinating response efforts when directed.
-May act in a limited capacity in the absence of the AASC or ASC, consistent with training and authority.
Other
-Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education:
-High school diploma or equivalent required.
Preferred Experience:
-Two years of experience in airport operations, security operations, administrative compliance, or a related field; OR
-One year of experience in airport badging, credentialing, or regulatory compliance is highly desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
-Valid Colorado driver's license and safe driving record.
-Must successfully complete TSA Security Background Check (SIDA badge eligibility).
-Must complete required TSA security training within three months of hire.
Other Requirements:
-Must be able to successfully pass a Federal Security Background Check in compliance with TSA SIDA badging requirements.
-Must complete Basic First Aid and CPR training within designated timeframes.
