This role combines hands-on patient care as a medical assistant with specialized diagnostic imaging responsibilities as an x-ray technologist in a busy urgent care environment. You prepare and position patients for radiology procedures, perform routine and specialized diagnostic imaging, and manage related documentation while also supporting front and back office operations, including rooming patients, taking vital signs, updating medical histories, and working in the electronic medical record. The position offers exposure to a wide variety of patient cases, opportunities for professional growth, and a schedule that includes weekday shifts and every other weekend.
Responsibilities
Prepare and position patients safely and comfortably for diagnostic imaging procedures.
Explain imaging procedures and processes clearly to patients to ensure understanding and reduce anxiety.
Perform specialized and routine diagnostic radiology procedures in accordance with established protocols and radiation safety standards.
Capture x-ray images, review them for proper identification, image quality, and compliance with quality control requirements.
Maintain accurate and complete documentation related to x-ray imaging, including logs, reports, and records in the electronic health record.
Support medical assistant duties such as taking vital signs, obtaining health histories, and documenting information in the EMR.
Room patients, verify medication history, review allergies, and ensure charts are updated prior to provider evaluation.
Perform clerical tasks including faxing, handling incoming documents, scanning patient notes, and processing referrals.
Assist with prior authorizations when needed, while collaborating with the dedicated prior authorization team for complex cases.
Handle insurance denials professionally and work to resolve issues in coordination with clinical and administrative staff.
Manage patient check-in and check-out processes, including verifying photo identification and insurance information.
Confirm patient appointments, make confirmation calls, and schedule follow-up visits in coordination with providers and team members.
Monitor and respond to telephone calls, in-person inquiries, and electronic chats, effectively separating front-desk and phone responsibilities.
Ensure imaging orders, including MRIs, are correctly entered and verified prior to scheduling or performing studies.
Collaborate with providers, nurses, and other team members at nursing stations, supporting referrals and follow-up care.
Provide patient-facing service and manage phone schedules with a strong focus on customer service and patient experience.
Maintain a safe, healthy, and professional work environment in clinical and imaging areas.
Demonstrate resilience and professionalism when working with patients and staff who may be stressed or upset, using strong interpersonal skills to de-escalate situations.
Participate in initial and ongoing training, including Epic EMR training and x-ray training with lead technologists.
Contribute to a culture of growth by supporting process improvements and being open to future advancement opportunities, including potential supervisory responsibilities for x-ray operations.
Essential Skills
Active certification as a Medical Assistant, with eligibility or interest in performing both administrative and back office clinical duties.
Completion of an AMA-approved school of Radiologic Technology.
Active American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification in radiology.
Diagnostic radiography license and demonstrated knowledge of radiation safety practices.
Experience with electronic health records, preferably Epic; AdvancedMD experience is also valuable.
Front and back office experience in a medical or urgent care setting.
Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with patients, providers, and team members.
Strong customer service and patient care skills, with the ability to support and calm upset or distressed patients.
Ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing check-in, telephone calls, chats, and documentation simultaneously.
Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, push and pull a minimum of 50 pounds, and stand for at least 6 hours per day.
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or completion of a GED-equivalent program.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in urgent care or high-volume outpatient settings, with exposure to a variety of patient cases.
Comfort working in environments where patients and staff may be direct or "rough around the edges," with the ability to maintain professionalism and thick skin.
Background in customer-facing roles such as hospitality, retail, or similar positions that demonstrate strong interpersonal and service skills.
Familiarity with Epic EMR is preferred over other systems, though training will be provided.
Interest in transitioning from primarily administrative medical assistant duties into more back office and clinical responsibilities over time.
Willingness to support both front office and clinical areas as needed, including reception, scheduling, and patient flow.
Ability to learn and follow detailed workflows for imaging, referrals, and insurance processes.
Openness to professional growth, including potential promotion into supervisory roles for x-ray technology as the team expands.
Work Environment
This position is based in an urgent care setting with multiple locations in New Jersey, including Freehold Township, Neptune City, and additional sites such as Piscataway and Monroe Township. The role involves a full-time schedule of approximately 40 hours per week, with weekday shifts and every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Weekend shifts are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and when you work a weekend you receive a weekday off to balance hours. Weekday scheduling may include combinations of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts, and you are not locked into a single fixed shift pattern. The environment is busy and can be demanding, with high daily patient volume and a wide variety of clinical presentations, though the number of x-rays per shift is not excessively high. You will work at nursing stations and front desks, collaborating closely with providers, nurses, and other team members, and you will use Epic as the primary EMR after completing required training. Initial onboarding includes Epic training before working onsite, followed by two days at the front desk and one day in clinical areas, plus approximately four hours of x-ray training with a lead x-ray technologist at a designated location. The culture values resilience, direct communication, and strong customer service, and you should be comfortable in a setting where patients and staff may be straightforward or stressed. You will frequently stand, walk, lift, push, and pull equipment or patients as part of routine duties, and you should be prepared to assist in both front office and clinical areas depending on daily needs.
