Job Title: Construction AccountantJob Description
The Construction Accountant supports senior finance leadership by managing project-based accounting activities, including monthly close, financial reporting, and reconciliations. This role oversees AIA billing, pay applications, job costing, and Work in Progress (WIP) reporting, while maintaining accurate records in the general ledger. The position plays a visible role in the financial operations of a growth-oriented construction and project services organization and offers the opportunity to work closely with executive leadership, contribute to strategic decision-making, and gain exposure to all facets of construction accounting and finance.
Responsibilities
Support senior finance leadership with monthly close activities, financial reporting, and account reconciliations.
Manage and oversee AIA billing, pay applications, and job costing across active construction projects.
Prepare, update, and maintain Work in Progress (WIP) reports to ensure accurate job cost tracking and reconciliation to the general ledger.
Review and process accounts payable, accounts receivable, and subcontractor payments in a timely and accurate manner.
Assist with cash flow management, including monitoring inflows and outflows and supporting related reporting.
Perform bank reconciliations and maintain the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of accounting records.
Support budgeting and forecasting processes by providing project-based financial data and analysis.
Assist with audit preparation by organizing documentation, supporting schedules, and responding to auditor inquiries.
Ensure compliance with lien waiver requirements and certificates of insurance (COI) tracking in coordination with project teams.
Help manage, mentor, and provide guidance to accounting support staff to ensure high-quality work and professional development.
Maintain and improve accounting processes and internal controls within Sage 300 to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Collaborate with project teams and senior leadership to provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making.
Prepare journal entries and support accounting operations related to project accounting and construction finance.
Monitor and reconcile project accounting records, including WIP reports, AIA billing, and percentage-of-completion accounting data.
Essential Skills
2-3 years of construction accounting experience.
Prior experience in construction accounting, with residential or high-end construction experience strongly preferred.
Proficiency in Sage 300, including daily use for accounting operations and project accounting.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, and XLOOKUP functions.
Solid understanding of AIA billing processes and pay applications.
Experience with job costing and project accounting in a construction environment.
Ability to prepare and analyze Work in Progress (WIP) reports.
Knowledge of percentage-of-completion accounting methods.
Hands-on experience with bank reconciliations and general ledger maintenance.
Ability to prepare and post journal entries accurately.
Experience with accounts payable and accounts receivable processing in an accounting operations setting.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data.
High level of organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively with project teams and senior leadership.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
Experience with G702 and G703 forms for construction billing is a plus.
Background in project accounting and construction finance is beneficial.
Familiarity with reconciliation processes across accounts payable, accounts receivable, and project-related accounts.
Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting, and audit preparation.
Ability to help mentor and guide accounting support staff.
Comfort working within a growth-oriented, project-focused organization.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, in-office position based in a professional construction and project services environment. The role follows a standard five-day workweek, with core hours from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. You will work closely with a small, collaborative finance team that includes senior financial leadership and specialists in accounts receivable, insurance, and accounts payable. The environment emphasizes accuracy, collaboration, and visibility into high-impact projects, with regular interaction with project teams and executive leadership.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
