Work Unit Overview: The Clerk of District Court's Office preserves the court records of the Richland County District Court. This is highly responsible clerical, administrative and legal support work in the Office of the Clerk of the District Court, including receiving, processing and filing of instruments and records, preparing court minutes and records, performing courtroom duties, receiving and accounting for monies and answering questions from attorneys and the public.

Job Summary: Perform duties associated with the handling of all documents and fees which pass through the Court; prepare and distribute court calendar, prepare juror summons; issue marriage licenses, process passport applications, file dockets and maintain court records; prepare correspondence, forms and other material; perform receptionist duties by answering the telephone, greeting the public, answering questions, receiving money, and issuing receipts and licenses; establish and maintain files and records; operate office machines such as computer, @typewriter, copiers, adding machines, scanner, compose correspondence and performs related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS AND DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS - The following knowledge, skills and abilities are required of every employee assigned to any deputy clerk's classification:

The use of computer, printer, scanner, @typewriter, telephone, calculator, fax, & copier Establishment and maintenance of filing and information retrieval systems Also requires self-motivation, efficient time management, the ability to prioritize tasks, and recognizing problems with documents. Personal computers and standard software applications related to court support work Basic filing and financial record keeping systems. Basic accounting practices, office procedures and practices English grammar, punctuation and spelling; communicate effectively using the English language, both orally and in writing. Mathematics sufficient to take and receipt cash money, accurately calculate and give change, balance a cash drawer and perform calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, individually and in a team environment. Learn court policies, procedures, documents and terminology affecting assigned functions, take court minutes and give oath to witnesses. Learn, apply and interpret laws, policies and procedures. Use good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. Establish and maintain office etiquette and effective working relationships with co-workers and other employees, other agencies and the public. Ability and willingness to accept varied work assignments. Unwavering ability to Maintain CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION. As an essential function of this position, the employee must be able to handle high levels of stress satisfactorily and be congenial with other employees, court professionals and the public. This position requires the ability to communicate with the public -- in person, in writing and on the phone, in sometimes stressful situations; to follow verbal and written instructions; make appropriate decisions according to State Statute and office policy; handle multi-tasks; perform duties in a timely manner; establish good working relations with fellow County and State employees, Supervisor and the public -- to exercise a professional manner at all times which includes friendliness, patience and courtesy. This position also performs secretarial and accounting/bookkeeping duties that will require accuracy and neatness.
