Duties Description State Counsel Division Civil Recoveries Bureau - AlbanyAssistant Attorney General, Oil Spill UnitReference No. CVB/OSUALB AAG_3905Application Deadline is September 18, 2026Salary Range: $87,356 - $186,493To be considered for this opportunity, submit a complete application online at ag.ny.gov/job-postings/attorneysThe State Counsel Division in the Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a litigator with judgment enforcement experience to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Oil Spill Unit of the Civil Recoveries Bureau in Albany. The Oil Spill Unit conducts civil litigation, pursuant to Article 12 of the New York Navigation Law, to recover state monies expended to remediate unlawful petroleum discharges that occur within the territorial confines of New York state. Navigation Law cost-recovery claims require review and analysis of complex Department of Environmental Conservation remediation projects. The unit's cases also involve ancillary areas of law such as real property, contracts, bankruptcy, and Surrogate's Court matters. Duties: - Handle all phases of litigation, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and jury trials.- Conduct all aspects of judgment enforcement, including investigations into the existence and collectability of assets; conducting post-judgment discovery, including depositions of judgment debtors and third parties; and commencing proceedings to recover assets, set aside fraudulent transfers, and obtain assets from judgment debtors or third parties. - Negotiate resolutions of litigation through settlements and workout agreements. - Supervise legal assistants and support staff engaged in judgment enforcement activities.

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications: - At least five (5) years of legal experience. - Experience and expertise in judgment enforcement, debtor/creditor law, and related litigation.- Demonstrated ability to manage a large, complex caseload effectively. - Excellent legal analysis, research, and writing skills. - Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
