Job Title: Substation Engineer
Job Description
This Substation Engineer role offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team of power professionals focused on designing and delivering high-voltage substation projects across the country. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers to develop technical designs, perform engineering calculations, and support projects from early concept through construction. The position provides hands-on experience with physical and protection/control design, exposure to industry standards, and strong mentorship to help you grow into a well-rounded power systems engineer.
Responsibilities
Assist in the design of high-voltage substations ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV, including physical layout, protection and control systems, grounding systems, and civil/structural elements.
Prepare detailed engineering drawings and design documents that support substation projects and construction activities.
Perform electrical calculations such as short circuit studies, load flow analysis, voltage drop calculations, and grounding analysis to ensure safe and reliable designs.
Support the development of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams for substation projects.
Collaborate with internal teams to integrate structural, civil, and environmental aspects into comprehensive substation designs.
Prepare technical specifications, bills of materials, and complete construction drawing and document packages.
Assist in writing engineering reports, design narratives, and other client deliverables that clearly explain design decisions and technical approaches.
Maintain organized project documentation and adhere to established quality control standards and procedures.
Participate in project meetings with clients, utilities, and internal stakeholders to discuss design progress, technical issues, and project milestones.
Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, including civil, structural, and environmental teams, to ensure cohesive and constructible project execution.
Communicate effectively with engineers and project managers to receive mentorship, clarify requirements, and incorporate feedback into design work.
Engage in on-the-job training and formal learning opportunities to build technical expertise in substation engineering and power delivery.
Stay current with industry standards and codes, including IEEE standards, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and the National Electrical Code (NEC), as well as specific utility requirements.
Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation by sharing ideas, identifying opportunities for process enhancements, and supporting best practices.
Apply knowledge of switchgear, transformers, relay equipment, wiring, switches, insulation, lightning protection, and power delivery systems in substation design tasks.
Support basic project management activities such as assisting with scheduling, project controls, proposal support, and estimating when needed.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering principles as applied to power delivery and substation design.
Experience using AutoCAD and/or MicroStation for engineering design and drafting.
