Job Description
The Staff Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial operations. This position oversees key accounting processes across the full accounting cycle, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, general ledger activity, reconciliations, and financial reporting. The role supports month-end close, ensures financial data accuracy, assists with audit activities, and may evolve into a supervisory position with oversight of AP and AR as the organization continues to grow.
Responsibilities
Prepare and post month-end journal entries and actively support all month-end close activities.
Perform bank reconciliations and ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled accurately and on time.
Review and reconcile Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable activity to maintain accurate financial records.
Monitor prepaid expenses and ensure proper allocation to appropriate accounts.
Maintain supporting schedules and detailed accounting documentation for all relevant accounts and transactions.
Assist with annual audit preparation and provide complete and accurate supporting documentation as requested.
Generate and review EFT payment batches for accuracy prior to approval.
Ensure all accounting transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures.
Work closely with accounting leadership to maintain the overall financial health and accuracy of financial statements.
Review existing accounting processes and identify opportunities for automation and process improvement, particularly within Accounts Receivable.
Collaborate closely with accounting team members to ensure a smooth workflow and strong internal controls.
Verify the accuracy of financial information, investigate issues, and resolve discrepancies promptly.
Help ensure all financial schedules, reconciliations, and reporting requirements are completed within required deadlines.
Oversee the flow of transactions through the accounting cycle and ensure accuracy at each stage.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience in a Staff Accountant, Accounting Specialist, Bookkeeper, or similar accounting role.
Strong understanding of the complete accounting cycle, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, prepaid expenses, and month-end close.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with reconciliations, financial schedules, formulas and functions, pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and managing large datasets.
Experience preparing journal entries, reconciling accounts, maintaining schedules, and supporting accurate financial reporting.
Hands-on experience with accounting or ERP systems; NetSuite experience strongly preferred, with comparable systems such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or Sage also considered.
Experience performing bank reconciliations and maintaining detailed supporting schedules.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills, with the ability to review financial information thoroughly before leadership approval.
Ability to identify discrepancies and ensure financial records are complete and accurate.
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with accounting leadership and team members.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree is not required; equivalent accounting experience will be considered.
Highly detail-oriented with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for financial results.
Trustworthy and able to handle sensitive financial information confidentially.
Process improvement mindset with an interest in increasing efficiency and reducing errors through automation.
Comfortable working in a collaborative environment and supporting cross-functional accounting processes.
Interest in taking on increased responsibilities over time, including potential oversight of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.

Work Environment
This is an on-site position based in Massachusetts, working Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The Staff Accountant works closely with an experienced accounting team in a collaborative environment focused on accuracy, efficiency, and strong internal controls. The role involves daily use of Microsoft Excel, ERP systems such as NetSuite or comparable platforms, and standard office technology and accounting tools. The work setting is structured and deadline-driven, particularly around month-end close and audit periods, while still offering opportunities to contribute to process improvements and automation initiatives. Professional office attire is expected, and the environment supports growth into increased responsibility, including potential supervisory oversight of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Turners Falls, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
