Job Title: Medical Lab Scientist
Job Description
The Medical Lab Scientist III performs advanced clinical laboratory testing to support accurate diagnosis and quality patient care. This role conducts routine and complex technical procedures, evaluates specimens, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory instruments, and ensures that all testing meets established quality and regulatory standards. The position requires significant hands-on laboratory experience, strong technical judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities
Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria and departmental standards.
Perform routine and complex technical laboratory procedures in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation to ensure proper functionality and minimize downtime.
Make sound technical decisions regarding testing, including problem solving and resolution of testing issues.
Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents and controls to support accurate and reliable laboratory results.
Report accurate and timely test results to support high-quality patient care and clinical decision-making.
Perform and document preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment as required.
Conduct quality control procedures, document results, and take appropriate corrective actions when needed.
Identify, replenish, and organize testing bench supplies to maintain continuous workflow.
Assist with specimen processing and handling when needed to support overall laboratory operations.
Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety protocols and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to a team-oriented laboratory environment.
Use laboratory information systems and computer applications to enter, review, and manage test data and documentation.
Communicate clearly and professionally with team members regarding test results, issues, and workflow priorities.
Follow all regulatory, accreditation, and internal policies related to clinical laboratory testing.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or equivalent education that meets local regulatory CLIA or state requirements.
Minimum of 5-7 years of clinical laboratory testing experience in a medical or clinical laboratory setting.
State Medical Technologist license, if required by local regulations for the specific work location.
ASCP or AMT certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist, if required for the position.
Demonstrated ability to perform routine and complex laboratory tests accurately and efficiently.
Strong technical skills in medical technology and clinical laboratory methodologies.
Proficiency with computers and ability to work with laboratory information systems.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning effectively in a team environment.
High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear documentation and collaboration.
Ability to pass a standardized color vision screening.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot instruments and resolve technical issues in the laboratory.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Certification by ASCP or AMT is preferred when not required, and is highly valued.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic medical record interfaces is a plus.
Previous experience in a high-volume clinical laboratory environment is beneficial.
Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and business needs.
Flexibility to work overtime or alternative shifts as needed to support laboratory operations.
Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with laboratory best practices and technologies.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory setting that involves working with biological specimens, reagents, and complex diagnostic instruments. The work environment is fast-paced and detail-oriented, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols and quality standards. Personal protective equipment is required and routinely worn to ensure safety when handling specimens and chemicals. The position may involve standing for extended periods, working at laboratory benches and instruments, and using computers and laboratory information systems throughout the day. Flexibility to work overtime or different shifts may be needed depending on business and patient care demands. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Nashville, TN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $44.00 - $44.75/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
