Job Title: Assistant Maintenance Manager
Job Description
The Assistant Maintenance Manager plays a key leadership role in a high-volume plastics manufacturing facility, ensuring that all production equipment and utility systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently. This position oversees maintenance planning and execution, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and leads a maintenance team focused on maximizing equipment uptime and supporting new and existing products.
Responsibilities
Review, prioritize, and schedule maintenance work to support continuous manufacturing operations and minimize downtime.
Coordinate maintenance, fabrication, and equipment modification activities that support new products, enhance existing products, and improve operational efficiency.
Direct the maintenance of utility systems to ensure reliable provision of heat, steam, electric power, gas, and compressed air for plant operations.
Partner closely with production, engineering, quality control, and management teams to resolve maintenance issues and improve equipment reliability, performance, and operating conditions.
Review production, quality control, and maintenance reports to plan, adjust, and optimize maintenance activities.
Develop and implement methods and procedures that improve operations, reduce costs, and optimize the use of labor, materials, and equipment.
Collaborate with design engineers to review new product plans and determine equipment needs and modifications required to support them.
Requisition and manage tools, equipment, parts, and supplies required for maintenance operations.
Train, mentor, and develop maintenance team members to improve performance and ensure understanding of company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
Prepare and monitor the departmental budget as needed, including cost control and resource allocation for maintenance activities.
Support capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects by providing maintenance input, coordinating resources, and assisting with installation and commissioning of new equipment.
Build and maintain an engaged, cohesive maintenance team focused on achieving department and company goals, key performance indicators (KPIs), high equipment uptime, robust preventive and predictive maintenance, organized tools and equipment, and rapid response to equipment failures.
Ensure maintenance practices emphasize risk management, safety, and compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision of a maintenance team of up to 15 or more employees, including assigning work, monitoring performance, and supporting professional growth.
Essential Skills
Minimum 5 years of experience leading or supervising industrial maintenance operations in a manufacturing or production environment.
Strong emphasis on mechanical systems, including troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of heavy industrial equipment.
Demonstrated experience in preventive maintenance and maintenance management within an industrial setting.
Hands-on experience with heavy industrial maintenance, including hydraulics and mechanical systems.
Proven ability to supervise and lead a team of up to 15 or more maintenance technicians, including coaching, performance management, and team building.
Experience with budgetary responsibility, including planning, monitoring, and controlling maintenance department costs.
Familiarity with MS Office applications for reporting, planning, and communication.
Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to plan, track, and document maintenance activities.
Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot complex equipment problems in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Effective written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical information to various stakeholders.
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate, train, and educate team members.
Ability to build and maintain successful relationships with regulatory agencies.
Comfort working in a factory environment with airborne particles, machinery noise, and occasional lifting up to 55 lbs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Plastic manufacturing experience is preferred, particularly in environments using PVC, polypropylene, polyethylene, or urethane films.
Experience working with utility systems such as steam, compressed air, gas, and power distribution in an industrial facility.
Demonstrated ability to support and execute capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects within a manufacturing environment.
Strong math aptitude to support budgeting, planning, and technical problem-solving.
Experience in developing and implementing maintenance methods and procedures that improve efficiency and reduce costs.
Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability and operational performance.

Work Environment

The environment is a factory setting with airborne particles, machinery noise, and exposure to heavy industrial equipment and utility systems. Work may involve hot conditions and 12-hour shifts, reflecting the demands of continuous manufacturing operations. The position requires occasional lifting of up to 55 lbs and regular movement throughout the production areas to inspect equipment, oversee maintenance activities, and respond to issues. Employees use MS Office and CMMS software to manage maintenance activities and documentation, and they work around utility systems that provide heat, steam, electric power, gas, and air. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
