THE POSITION
As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with the Department of Transportation in Westmoreland County, you will take on meaningful work that keeps essential equipment ready for the road. This role offers hands-on challenges and the chance to strengthen your mechanical skills every day. You will work with a wide range of vehicles and systems, supporting safe and dependable operations across the county. Your expertise will help ensure that crews have the reliable equipment they need to serve the traveling public.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position focuses on repairing, inspecting, and maintaining diesel and gasoline-powered equipment to support safe and efficient county operations. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
Vehicle Repair:Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components on various equipment
Preventative Maintenance:Perform diagnostics, tune-ups, and system adjustments to keep equipment operating safely
State Inspections:Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete required records
Equipment Diagnostics:Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and determine correct repair methods
Safety Practices:Maintain a safe work area, use proper protective equipment and report hazards promptly

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full-time employment
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) ;or
Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment;or
An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
Additional Requirements:
This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
