Job Title: Construction Project Lead
Job Description
The Construction Project Lead is accountable for delivering complex concrete construction projects to defined goals through structured planning and disciplined execution. This role uses the Project Execution Process (PEP) to anticipate challenges, align daily activities with long-term objectives, and coordinate resources between the field, operations, and the customer. The Project Lead plays a central role in developing comprehensive project plans, reinforcing planning discipline, mentoring field leaders, and ensuring safe, high-quality, and efficient project outcomes.
Responsibilities
Develop a comprehensive project plan that incorporates all relevant project, customer, and company information in collaboration with the Project Coordinator, Field Leads, and centers of excellence to ensure the correct project outcomes are achieved.
Validate that the project team has all necessary bid and contract information to begin detailed planning for the project.
Review all project documentation and create a Project Plan that aligns with contract requirements, estimated budget, schedule, safety, and quality expectations.
Create and prepare the Customer Plan, including key focus areas, critical items to address, and structured interactions to ensure expectations are met and issues are proactively managed.
Create and prepare the Equipment Plan, including a detailed list of equipment and duration by project phase in collaboration with the Equipment Coordinator.
Develop and present a sequenced project schedule with clear milestones, ensuring logical phasing of work and coordination with field operations.
Define detailed quality expectations for key elements of the project, including the means and methods to be used by field teams, and incorporate lessons learned and risk prevention strategies from prior projects.
Develop specific action plans related to talent development priorities for the project team, leveraging project activities as opportunities for growth and skill enhancement.
Integrate safety into all aspects of project planning by identifying likely hazards, planning their elimination or mitigation, and establishing a schedule of required safety trainings.
Communicate expectations clearly with subcontractors and vendors to ensure coordination, collaboration, and alignment on scopes of work and schedule.
Collaborate with the Project Coordinator and Operations leadership in the creation and preparation of the Construction Project Plan (CPP) and participate in customer plan presentations.
Refine and update the project plan based on customer feedback in collaboration with the Project Coordinator, ensuring alignment with customer needs and project goals.
Deliver the Project Plan and phase information to assigned Field Leads, schedule their activities, set expectations, and define the phase planning details and due dates.
Review detailed phase plans created by Field Leads and validate, adjust, or influence them as needed to align with overall project goals and performance targets.
Create and maintain a site logistics plan and engage Field Leads to use site space and staging areas efficiently for equipment, materials, and crew movement.
Review job cost reports regularly to monitor performance against budget, verify accurate coding of time and quantities, and track material and consumable expenditures.
Adjust work plans and resource allocation to meet budget targets while maintaining safety, quality, and schedule commitments.
Influence production and craft activities to meet the planned schedule, and collaborate with the Project Coordinator to accelerate the schedule or overcome challenges when needed.
Prepare and deliver short-interval schedules and relevant phase plans; assess weekly performance against the plan and lead discussions to adjust plans to achieve future targets.
Communicate clear expectations to Field Leads for the upcoming week regarding daily production, safety, quality, and other goals based on progress and short-interval schedules.
Use the On Rent Report to maximize equipment utilization in collaboration with the Equipment Coordinator and Project Coordinator, and monitor routine maintenance, photo documentation, and damage control.
Report, discuss, and make decisions on project opportunities and risks with the Project Coordinator and operations leadership as needed.
Conduct regular site walks with safety leadership to identify safety deficiencies, and create action plans that address issues and explain the rationale behind corrective actions.
Encourage and ensure consistent use of the Near Hit Program, safety initiatives, and root cause analysis (RCA) processes at the expected cadence.
Communicate directly with customers in the field about project needs, opportunities, and coordination with other trades to maintain strong relationships and smooth operations.
Adjust manpower levels and work plans based on daily job cost information to drive production results while maintaining budget and schedule.
Review appropriate operational analysis tools (OAT) with Field Leads for current and upcoming phases of work to ensure alignment with project goals.
Review the plan for the next day with Field Leads and provide feedback to refine activities and priorities.
Prompt Field Leads and Crew Task Leads to anticipate their needs and develop plans to execute high-risk activities safely and efficiently.
Identify key work items and lead daily discussions with Field Leads and craft teams to prioritize tasks each morning.
Set production targets that align with schedule, budget, safety, and quality objectives and monitor performance against these targets.
Complete daily reports to customers as needed, documenting progress, issues, and resolutions.
Confirm and coordinate execution of punch list items to ensure customer satisfaction and compliance with contractual requirements.
Coach project team members by using project activities as opportunities for talent development and performance improvement.
Educate, teach, and mentor Field Leads and Crew Task Leads on construction management, estimation, subcontractor coordination, and career development within construction project leadership.
Essential Skills
Several years of experience in project management for large-scale projects with a concrete contractor or a self-performing general contractor.
Experience managing data center, large industrial, or commercial concrete projects.
Strong knowledge of construction principles and practices, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, safety, and quality control.
Demonstrated experience working on projects with values over 1 million dollars.
Proven ability to develop and execute comprehensive project plans, including customer, equipment, logistics, safety, and quality plans.
Ability to read, interpret, and work from bids, contracts, drawings, and technical specifications.
Experience monitoring job cost reports, analyzing cost code performance, and adjusting work plans to meet budget targets.
Skill in creating and managing short-interval schedules and sequenced project schedules with milestones.
Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to coordinate project execution among internal teams, subcontractors, vendors, and customers.
Ability to lead and influence field teams, including Field Leads and crew leaders, to achieve production, safety, quality, and schedule goals.
Competence in identifying project risks and opportunities and developing mitigation and improvement plans.
Experience integrating safety into project planning, including hazard identification, mitigation strategies, and safety training schedules.
Strong communication skills for daily coordination with customers, field teams, and operations leadership.
Ability to coach and mentor team members in construction management, estimation, subcontractor coordination, and career development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Engineering preferred.
Experience with data center, large industrial, or commercial concrete structures and self-performed concrete work.
Familiarity with project execution frameworks and structured planning processes such as a Project Execution Process (PEP).
Experience collaborating with equipment coordinators to plan and optimize equipment usage and logistics.
Experience in developing and presenting customer plans and participating in formal customer meetings.
Experience using safety programs such as Near Hit reporting and root cause analysis (RCA) to drive continuous improvement.
Ability to develop talent development plans and support career growth for field and crew leaders.
Strong analytical skills for interpreting operational analysis tools and using data to guide decisions.
Comfort working on high-value, complex projects with multiple stakeholders and trades.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in a field-based construction environment, with regular presence on active job sites that involve heavy equipment, concrete work, and coordination with multiple trades. The Construction Project Lead works closely with field leadership, craft teams, and operations staff, using structured planning tools, job cost reports, short-interval schedules, and equipment utilization reports to manage project performance. The work involves frequent site walks to review safety, quality, logistics, and production, as well as direct interaction with customers and subcontractors in the field. Hours may vary based on project demands and phases, and the role requires flexibility to respond to schedule changes, production needs, and critical project milestones. Safety practices and adherence to established procedures are central to the work environment, with ongoing use of safety initiatives, Near Hit programs, and root cause analysis to maintain a safe and efficient job site.
