The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Physical Therapy has an exciting opportunity for a full time Physical Therapist Fellow to work in Coral Gables, FL. The Physical Therapist Resident/ Fellow assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that assist patients and clients to improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and improve disabling conditions resulting from disease or injury.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS1. Plans, prepares, or carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain, and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.2. Performs and documents initial examinations and evaluates data to identify problems and reach a diagnosis prior to intervention.3. Records prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patients' charts or appropriate database.4. Reviews physicians' referrals and patients' medical records to help determine appropriate diagnosis and physical therapy treatment.5. Instructs patients and families on how to continue treatment procedures at home.6. Confers with the patients, medical practitioners, and other stakeholders to plan, implement, and assess intervention programs.7. Administers manual exercise, massage or traction to help relieve pain, increase patient strength, and decrease or prevent deformity or crippling.8. Provides educational information about physical therapy, injury prevention, ergonomics, and ways to promote health.9. Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjust treatments to achieve maximum benefit.10. Tests, measures, and records patients' strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory or circulatory efficiency.11. Education:
Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy
Certification and Licensing:
Licensure as a Physical Therapist in the state of Florida
Current Florida State physical therapy license in good standing or demonstrate an ability to obtain Florida Licensure
Possess ABPTS Sports or Orthopedic board certification or completion of prior ABPTRE accredited sports/orthopedic physical residency program.
Possess one of the following: a current ATC designation, current license as an EMT, or certification as an emergency responder.

Department Specific Functions
Athletics Responsibilities: Athlete Care & Injury Assessment and Management
Evaluate and manage acute and chronic upper extremity injuries in athletes.
Develop immediate care and management strategies for common baseball-related injuries such as rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, and ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries.
On-Site Athletic Event Coverage
Provide physical therapy coverage for athletic events, including games and practices.
Manage acute injuries on-site and provide immediate care to athletes.
Performance Optimization
Collaborate with athletic trainers and strength coaches to develop conditioning and injury prevention programs tailored to baseball and overhead athletes.
Conduct performance assessments, including range of motion, strength, tech, and functional movement analysis.
Education and Training: Educational Workshops and Seminars
Organize and conduct educational sessions for baseball players, coaches, and trainers on injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation specific to overhead athletes.
Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in sports medicine and share knowledge with the athletic team.
Administrative and Logistical Support: Coordination with University Athletics Department
Liaise with the university's athletics department to ensure cohesive care for student-athletes.
Participate in meetings with athletic department staff to discuss athlete health and program needs.
Research and Development: Clinical Research
Participate in or lead clinical research projects related to upper extremity injuries and sports rehabilitation.
Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences, focusing on the unique needs of this athlete group.
Mentorship and Supervision
Mentor and supervise physical therapy students, residents, and athletic training students, focusing on the care of baseball and overhead athletes
Provide guidance and support in clinical and research activities.
Professional Development: Continuing Education
Participate in continuing education activities focused on the care and rehabilitation of baseball and overhead athletes.
Attend conferences and workshops relevant to upper extremity physical therapy and sports medicine for this specific athlete population.
Attends and participates in Grand Rounds to represent the Department of Physical Therapy and acquire information from our larger medical community to disseminate relevant information for staff development and service delivery.
Use of Department Specific Tools and Equipment:
Walker, crutches, cane, wheelchair, lift equipment, hospital beds, commodes, goniometer, traction units, ultrasound machine, electrical stimulation machines, iontophoresis, vasopneumatic pump, cuff weights, pulley weights, isokinetic exercise equipment, and general office equipment (telephone, computer, facsimile machine and copier).
