Custer County is currently hiring for Part-Time permanent Customer Service and Motor Vehicle Specialist position. Will typically range between 15-30 hours per week depending on operational demand and coverage requirements. While we offer scheduling flexibility, regular availability on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons is highly preferred to meet our core departmental requirements. The wage is $21.35/hr. The Treasurer's Office is a welcoming and professional office with a dedicated team. The office provides essential services to the public, including motor vehicle registrations, title transfers, tax payment processing and issuance of permits. Community members can rely on the office for accurate, confidential and friendly assistance with a variety of county-related financial and motor vehicle matters. Job Summary: The Customer Service and Motor Vehicle Specialist at the Custer County Treasurer's Office performs a variety of clerical duties to support the processing of documents and receipts. This role involves assisting customers with motor vehicle titles and registrations, reviewing paperwork for accuracy and compliance and handling tax payments and departmental deposits. Working in the Custer County Treasurer's Office means contributing to a dynamic team that values accuracy, professionalism and excellent customer service. The role requires adaptability, attention to detail and the ability to handle frequent interruptions while maintaining confidentiality.

Assist customers with motor vehicle titles, ensuring compliance with Montana statutes and regulations

Enter incoming motor vehicle titles into the Montana Motor Vehicle Computer System

Resolve title discrepancies with financial institutions and dealerships, ensuring documentation is secure for compliance

Process tax payments received by mail and over the counter

Utilize customized software for entering payments received

Balance daily cash receipts and act as backup for daily balancing

Handle large amounts of money responsibly

Make bank deposits in the absence of the County Treasurer or Deputy Treasurer

Accept and enter departmental deposits

Postmark outgoing mail with county postage machine

Process motor vehicle registrations

Professionally assist customers over the phone adhering to customer service policies

Perform general office duties and maintenance as needed

Demonstrate proficiency in data and word processing and knowledge of computer applications

Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Organize and prioritize work tasks, make independent judgments and solve routine problems

Stay engaged with assigned duties, seek out additional tasks when primary responsibilities are complete and consistently maintain productivity

Keep updated on taxation and motor vehicle laws

Establish effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors and the public

Willingness to work additional hours as needed to ensure team coverage and when needed to during high-volume business periods (May and November are the months when customer traffic and workload are typically at their highest)

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: The following physical requirements are typical of those encountered at the job site and must be met in order to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Successful performance of the duties associated with this position requires: standing, walking, climbing steps, sitting, use of hands and fingers, talking and hearing. Employees may occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. In the future, the Treasurer's Office will be changing the office layout to counter-height workstations. The layout is designed to support ergonomic flexibility, allowing employees to alternate between sitting and standing. Professional, height-adjustable seating will be available for all workstations. This layout facilitates professional face-to-face customer interactions while maintaining employee comfort. Probationary Period: This job position has a probationary period of 12 months with an option to extend the probationary period up to 18 months. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Familiarity with modern office practices and clerical work

Attention to detail

Effective communication and ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Strong problem-solving abilities

Handle several tasks at one time

Strong clerical accounting skills with ability to process financial records and collect payments and fees quickly and with a high degree of accuracy

Ability to prepare accurate and detailed records/reports

Technical proficiency in a modern office environment, including data entry (ten-key) and integrated hardware like networked printers and scanners

Capacity to work well under pressure and with the public

Ability to handle confidential documents, including scanning, indexing electronic files and maintaining organized paper records

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent

Work experience processing payments (cash, check and credit) and balancing daily receipts

One year of customer service work experience

Some knowledge of tax and motor vehicle statutes (preferred)

Basic understanding and ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

Ability to quickly adapt to proprietary software and database management systems

Assessment testing will be conducted through Montana Job Service. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Please obtain a Custer County application from the Miles City Job Service and leave completed applications with Job Service to forward to the employer.
