Summary The incumbent is responsible for general maintenance and repair requirements as established by the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, Supervisory Healthcare Engineer, Deputy Chief or Chief of Facilities Management Service for the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. Responsibilities Major duties included but not limited to: Maintaining, repairing, altering, and constructing exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, and stone. Constructing window sills, lintels, and arches capable of supporting walls above the openings. Cutting, shaping and finishing stone Operating equipment such as skid steer, boom lift, backhoe and tractor required for earthwork. Replacing and install new concrete sidewalks Makes repairs on high grade wooden items such as cabinetry furniture and decorative wood for interior finishes for offices, conference room, medical rooms and so forth. Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building materials. Independently plans and completes projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, trusses, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, and beams. Physical Requirements: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and boom/scissor lifts. Work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 60 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is concentrated at the medical center and majority of work performed is in patient care areas inside and outside the facility. The incumbent must be constantly alert and have situational awareness of his/her surroundings to prevent complications which may develop and attempt to minimize hazards associated with performance of the position. Incumbent can be exposed to a full array of weather conditions; High winds, heavy rain, flooding, high humidity and temperature levels. The individual might be required to work outside during inclement weather or in building shells where protections from natural elements is limited. Exposed to dust, dirt, direct sunlight, tight workspaces such as confined space. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment, fully body harness, respirators and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable.
